TAYLOR, BELYEW, BELOTE, SELF, OUTLAW. David Nelson TAYLOR was my g-grandfather. He was born about 1846 in either TN or AL. He first married N. Caroline BELYEW (or BELOTE). She was born about 1844 in TN. In the 1880's they were living in Dist. 10 Stewart Co., which is now part of Land Between the Lakes. Some of their neighbors were GARDNER, BAIRD and BOSWELL; John M. TAYLOR lived nearby. Nelson and Caroline had 2 children: Fannie Suzanne born 1877 and William Jesse born 1882. Caroline died 1882-1887. In 1887 Nelson married George Ann SELF. He died 1888-1889. George W. OUTLAW of Houston Co. took the children to his home at Danville and this is where Fannie (my grandmother) lived until her marriage in 1902. If anyone has information on any of the above-mentioned people, or any other Taylors living in the area during that time, I would greatly appreciate your help. BOYT. I saw on the Stewart Co., TN web page that a Samuel Boyt was one of the 1st settlers in Stewart Co. area, but I can't find him in tax records, 1820 census, etc. If there is someone who has researched this Samuel Boyt, I wish they would contact me. I think he might have come from Northampton co., NC, since it stated that he was from NC prior to 1795. Goodspeed's book listed him as living in the Panther Creek District of Stewart Co., TN by 1795. I am asking 2 things. 1st: Is there anyone Stewart County who has any knowledge of the Luton/Luten family? They originated from North Carolina to Tennessee. 2nd: The tract of land in this deed says it begins on the north side of Cumberland River on a beach 3/4 mile below the mouth of Sullen Creek and crossing the creek. It gives other distances using rees as markers. Could someone give me a ball-park idea where this might be in Stewart CO? SHAMEL, WALLACE. I have a letter from 1890 written by my guncle John M. NEWTON to his brothers. He tells of a barbeque at Tom CLARK'S store on the 25th of July where Black Green LEDFORD was killed by Tom HAMILTON for selling whiskey. He mentions that the constable of Stewart Cty, John SHAMEL killed Jim WALLACE in the winter, and then someone killed SHAMEL, but did not know who. Has anyone ever heard this story? TIDWELL. My 2nd great-grandparents, Jordan and Elizabeth TIDWELL lived in Stewart Co., TN for many years beginning in the 1860's. They had children John Wilson TIDWELL, Susan Jane TIDWELL, Elizabeth TIDWELL MARTIN, Thomas Jefferson TIDWELL, Julia TIDWELL, Mathilda TIDWELL BURNS. Elizabeth, the mother, is buried in Long Creek Cemetery on Mr. Brigham's land but cannot find Jordan's grave. He worked for the L&N railroad as did Thomas. John W. worked in the Bear Spring Furnace and was always in trouble. It is said he killed a banker who was coming to take his farm. He was sent to the pen in Nashville but jumped overboard the steam boat taking him there. He was supposed to be the fastest swimmer and runner in Stewart Co. He proved it that day in 1883. He was married to Martha RUTLEDGE of Houston Co.; Mary COX of Stewart Co. and another when he finally landed in Texas. Does anyone know of this family or any connections with it? SHAMEL, WALLACE. I have a letter from 1890 written by my guncle John M. NEWTON to his brothers. He tells of a barbeque at Tom CLARK'S store on the 25th of July where Black Green LEDFORD was killed by Tom HAMILTON for selling whiskey. He mentions that the constable of Stewart Cty, John SHAMEL killed Jim WALLACE in the winter, and then someone killed SHAMEL, but did not know who. Has anyone ever heard this story? WALLACE. My gggrandfather was Berry WALLACE born about 1818 in SC. He lived in Lincoln County, TN around 1850. No wife was listed, but there was 6 children. I wonder if there could be a connection to Berry WALLACE who lived in Dover, Stewart. TN. I really need help on the Wallace side. If we could be connected please let me know.
