1867 Passengers from Dover on the Ship Golconda for Grand Cape Mount, Liberia

The following 49 people left Dover around November 1867, bound for Charleston and passage aboard the Golconda, a ship that made multiple trips to Liberia in the late 1860s and early 1870s, taking passengers to Liberia who wished to establish a new life there.  The Golconda was an ocean-going vessel which boarded its passengers at Charleston, SC.  It is unknown at this time how the people listed below made their way from Dover to Charleston to board the ship, which sailed on 17 November 1867.  One contemporary newspaper account suggests that they first traveled to Knoxville, where free transportation to Charleston was provided to them.

This list was found in the African Repository and Colonial Journal, the journal of the American Colonization Society.  This book was accessed for free via Google Books (http://books.google.com), a great research tool for any genealogical or historical researcher.

In addition to Google Books, supplemental information about the Golconda and the activities of the American Colonization Society can also be found by searching contemporary newspapers on the Library of Congress’ Chronicling America free website.

The November 1867 passage of the Golconda included 312 passengers, all of whom are listed in this PDF file.  Transcribed below are the 49 passengers said to be from Dover, Tennessee.

It is likely that not all of the people listed below had been Stewart County residents, but that some had traveled from adjoining counties in order to catch a boat in Dover that would eventually get them to Charleston to catch the Golconda.

The list of Dover passengers states that they were bound for Grand Cape Mount, Liberia.
