Formerly Company "H", 4th (Murry’s Cavalry Regiment (qv.) Men from Smith County

    

The 4th/8th Tennessee Cavalry under Colonel Baxter Smith was organized on November 2, 1862 and reorganized again on in January 1863. The unit became a composite unit of 12 companies A-K with one unassigned Field and Staff Company who were used as scouts and messengers. By consolidating four companies, from Murry’s (4th) Cavalry, Spiller’s Battalion (formerly Company F of the 5th Battalion of Cavalry), Davis’ Cavalry Battalion, Major Beldsoe’s Cavalry Battalion, on January 23, 1863 the 4th /8th Tennessee Cavalry, became an organized unit in the Confederate States of America, Army of the Tennessee.

 

Its twelve companies consisted of men conscripted or enlisted from the counties of Marshall, Sullivan, Smith, Dekalb, Wilson, Hamilton, Cannon, Rutherford, Fentress, Sumner, Davidson, Knox and Blount counties and the State of Alabama. The regiment served under Generals Wharton, Bragg, H. D Davidson, Harrison, Wheeler, Longstreet and Hood.

 

The regiment served in both the Western and Eastern theaters of the war. The regiment served in Middle Tennessee in 1863-64. In the latter part of 1864 and 1865 they saw service in Georgia, Alabama, Virginia and the Carolinas. The unit served with honor at the major battles of Dover, Knoxville, and Chattanooga, Tennessee, Bardstown, Perryville, and, Munfordville, Kentucky, Saltville, Virginia, Chickamuga, Tunnel Hill, Hope Church, Georgia and other battle during the Atlanta Campaign against Sherman’s March to the Sea, in 1864-65. The Fourth Tennessee under the command of Lt. Colonel Paul Anderson had the honor to lead the last Confederate cavalry charge of the war at Bentonville, North Carolina in March 21, 1865. The Unit surrendered on April 26, 1865 at Charlotte North Carolina and was paroled on May 3, 1865 to return home to their families.
