Piper's School was located about three miles southwest of Pleasant Shade on Nickojack Branch.
It was already in existence in 1870. The school was named in honor of William (Bill) Piper who
donated the land. Bill was born February 2, 1830 and died April 10, 1900. He was the son of
James and Marinda Piper, both born about 1806. Bill was first married to Nancy Oldham and
they became the parents of a number of children as noted in the 1870 census. Nancy died in 1870
and Bill married Mary Nixon and they became the parents of three children (see 1880 census).
One grandson of Bill and Mary Nixon Piper was the late Woodrow Piper (son of Howard Eugene
and Lassie Towns Piper) Smith Co. Schools Superintendent in the mid 1950's.
Two former teachers at Piper's School were Mary Nixon Piper and Calvin Gregory.
