Joseph William and Mary Eveline Kemp Steverson/Stephenson
Joseph W. Steverson b. 4-29-1849 was married first to Mary Wilson b.6-13-1851, on 10-03-1869,
she died 3-28-1883. He was the son of Josiah W. Steverson/Stephenson who d. 4-23-1849 and
Delia Ann Norris b.9-10-1822 and d. 8-09-1852. After his first wife died in 1883 he married
Miss Mary Eveline Kemp, daughter of Asa and Polly Ann Williams Kemp. No dates in Norris Bible
or Kemp Bible. She was b. 9-23-1860 and d. 3-22-1895, buried in the John M. Kemp cemetery on
Little Salt Lick Rd.. Her children were: a son Elzora b. 1888, a son Sammy Taylor b. 1890, a
son Chester Odel b. 1893 and a daughter Bessie May b. Dec. 02, 1894. This last child was
almost four months old when the mother died. The family mystery is why these children were
raised by people other than their father. At least two of them were raised by relatives of
Robbie Nesbitt Frye. One being a Nesbitt who lived in Ash Hopper in Smith Co., Tenn..
Their names and births that were recorded in the Norris - Steverson Bible appear to have
been written by William L. Kemp Jr., and same person recorded Mary E.'s death. These were
the last entries in this Bible with the exception of John Bob Kemp b. 2-22-22 s/o Asa E.
and Sally Bullard Kemp and written by Virgie Allen Kemp, his grandmother and sister in-law
of Mary E. Kemp Steverson. The first entry in this bible is James Norris who was born the
15th day of July 1773 & his wife Nancy Blakemore who was born on the 7th day of July 1786.
I do not have the bible, but copied pages I soon hope to submit to this site. Joseph may
have died while children were small. Joseph had children by Mary Wilson Steverson and they
are: John Arnold Steverson b. 1870; Adelia A. Steverson b. 1876; Ollie E. Steverson b. 1879;
William Norris Steverson b. 1881. John Arnold Steverson had a grocery store in Nashville,
Tennessee and patented horse and human remedies.
