Shelton was married on September 19, 1920 in Carthage to Mary Leathie McCaleb. Mary
was born June 16, 1892 at Lancaster Hill, Smith County, TN and died September 12, 1972
in Carthage. Both Shelton and Mary are buried at Ridgewood Cemetery in Carthage.
Mary McCaleb McClellan was one of thirteen children of John Washington McCaleb and
John "Alice" Searcy. John and Alice both lived, died, and are buried in Smith County, TN.
Shelton was a tobacco farmer his entire life. He loved to whittle underneath the cool
comfort of a shade tree. He regularly whittled outside the Smith County Court House
in Carthage with a group of men from the area. Shelton would waste nothing. He would
chew the same piece of gum for days before replacing it. When he wasn't chewing the
gum, he would stick it on the back of a shoe horn and set it on the Bible and phone stand.
He would later retrieve it when he was ready to chew some more. Mary was a homemaker,
loved to grow flowers, and gathered regularly with other women to make quilts. She made
clothes and canned food a great deal of the time. Everybody loved to visit them; not only
for Mary's cooking, but because they truly loved having company.
All These World War I photos were in the Robert Shelton and Mary Leathie McCaleb
McClellan Scrap Book which has been scanned for the Smith County Website.Robert
and Mary were responsible for the collection and safekeeping of the WW1 photos.
These photos remained untouched in their home in Carthage for about 17 years after
Shelton's death. I found them in my grandmother's (Mary's) cedar chest. The house
had been abandoned for so long that the pictures have suffered a great deal.
