The Hacketts of the Pleasant Shade area trace their ancestry back to Normandy, France. The name
means little Hack or hache (hook). They were hack (cod) fishermen and their name was derived from
that occupation. The earliest known Hackett was William Peter Hackett, Sr., born in England and moved
to Charlottesville, VA. in the 1700s. He was married to Amanda Southerland Hackett.

William Peter Hackett, Jr., born in Charlottesville Feb 14, 1786, was the first known Hackett to move
to Smith County. He was married to Ann (Annie) Garrett Hackett Mar 12, 1818 in Albemarle County,
VA. She was the daughter of William E. and Mary Branch Coleman Garrett. Family tradition claims Peter
Hackett, Jr. and six other Hackett men come to Smith County in about 1833 and settled between the
Turkey Creek and Devil's Elbow communities.

Peter and Annie Hackett became the parents of nine children, six being born in Virginia. Peter
died Jan 8, 1860 and Annie died Jan 2, 1865 at Monoville. They were Baptists and are buried
in the Haynie Cemetery pictured on this website.

Pictured are William Temple (Buck) and Mahala Jane Vance Hackett. Buck was born Jan 25, 1820 in
Buckingham County, Va. and was the second born of Peter and Annie. Mahala was born Jan 9, 1826.
She was the daughter of John Vance. They were married Jan 4, 1844. Mahala was a small lady with
black eyes. Buck died Jul 9, 1889 in the Defeated Creek community and Mahala died Dec 18, 1907.
Buck and Mahala became the parents of ten children (seven boys and three girls).
