Mrs. Geo. Allen Canter

My dear little wife:

I now take the greatest of pleasure in writing you to tell you I am still well and hope these lines will find you all the same.

Well, it has been announced that the war is over.  Guess you know how overjoyed I am without my trying to tell you.  Can’t hardly wait until time for me to get on a ship and start back to dear old U.S.A. and trust it won’t be long.  Everybody says that the war is about over and I believe by the time you get this it will be.

Say mama and papa spent the day with you?  Tell them I would like to see them too.

You asked me who I was with.  I am with the boys I left Camp Jackson with.  I saw Hargis Butler this morning.  He came to see me and said that he had a letter from Chester Sircy a few days ago, and Chester has been on the front but was back for a few days rest.  While he was on the front the Germans came over to see them.  He said that all of them didn’t get back either and they didn’t lose a man.  You asked how I liked Sunny France.  I don’t like it so very well for many reasons.  They are too far behind with their modes and methods of living.  I’m sure they haven’t made any advance in years.  Will tell you about our hike this morning.  Some other boys and myself went out walking to pass the time away, going on top of a great high mountain.  We had some field glasses and could see as far as our eyes would let us.  While up there, we came across a hollow bush and I’m sending you a leaf as a souvenir. Say Asa and Burford Kemp are over here?  Would like to see them.  Wonder what little Georgia Bell is doing?  Guess she is almost grown by now, as it seems so long since I saw her.  It is real funny to see all the boys this morning.  We all have a book going around getting each others names and home addresses so when we get home we can write to each other.  I feel so good over the war news that I can’t think of anything else to write, but think I have told you a whole lot in just a few words.  Am sending Georgia Bell a post card in this letter.  Tell everybody hello for me, and I am hoping to see you all about Christmas.  Tell mama to have a lot of good things cooked, for I believe I will be at home.  Write every chance you get for I am always glad to get a letter from home.

Your husband,

PVT. GEO. ALLEN CANTER
