ANDREW
BLAIR; SR.
(circa 1760 - circa 1867)
It
is believed that Andrew Blair; Sr., the father of Charles R. Blair, was born
circa 1760 in Virginia (according to census records for Charles R. Blair) and
died circa 1867 in Beardstown, IL (Cass County) at age 107. Andrew married a Walker. Andrew is thought to have been the son of
James Blair; Sr. and Hannah Smith Blair of Rowan Co. N.C., though it is not
proven. James Blair Sr. is thought to
be the son of John Blair of Guilford Co, NC, this too has not been proven. According to research done by Benji Blair,
this assumption is based on family tradition and records which state that
Andrew was from North Carolina and that “according to family tradition and
research of descendants, the North Carolina Blairs began with two brothers,
James and John. James only son, some
say, died as a young boy. The identity
of his only daughter, Agnes, has been lost.
James died March 1776 and was buried at Alamance Presbyterian Church.
According
to family legend, as told by Hannibal Blair who was the great grandson of
Andrew Blair Sr., Andrew migrated from Virginia to North Carolina where he
married and reared a family. He said
this migration occured before the war of the revolution. Andrew is said to have served in the patriot
army during the war of independence but no records of this have been
found. From North Carolina Andrew
migrated to Tennessee. This could possibly
have been around 1800 as one of his daughters was born in North Carolina circa
1800 and another daughter was born in Tennessee circa 1801. Andrew shows up in the tax lists in Warren
Co., TN in 1812 and the 1820 and 1830 census records for Warren Co, TN. Andrew Blair has claim #7955 for 200 acres
of land on the waters of the Barrin fork of the Collins River in the 3rd
district, dated Oct 17, 1816 in Warren Co, TN.
This claim appears to be adjacent to Andrew Blairs occupant claim of 232
acres. Andrew Blare (sic) has claim #1258 of grant book no. (1-2426) in Warren
Co. Near McMinnville,TN dated Jan 5, 1826. This claim on the south side of the
Bannon fork was for 37 ½ acres.
Hannibal
Blair said the “Andrew sold out in 1836 and went ot Missouri with his
wife. After several years, one of his
grandson’s took him to Beardstown, IL where he lived with his daughter, Fannie
“Esther” Miller. An A. Blair shows up
in Beardstown IL (Cass County) census in 1845, age 85.
The
“History and family record of the N.W.” dated Aug 26, 1914, Camas, Washington,
and research compiled by Benji Blair, stated Andrew Blair’s children as
follows:
I. Alexander “Pete” Blair (born circa
1792 NC - died Aug 1, 1874 Polk Co, MO). It is said that Alexander’s sons
always
called him “the old man or Pete”, he also
referred to himself as Pete, especially when he was excited.

Chapter 1
(circa 1795 - circa 1881)
Charles R. Blair (circa 1795- circa l881) and his wife Sarah
Sallie Campbell - Blair (circa 1803 -
circa l865) are the earliest proven known members of this particular branch of
the Blair family. Charles was born in
North Carolina (possibly Rowan County) and according to census records, both of
his parents were born in Virginia. It
is believed that Charles was the son of Andrew Blair (born circa 1760 and died
circa 1867 in Beardstown, IL) who married a Walker. Sarah was born in Smith County, TN. Family legend, as told by Minnie Lee Blair, says that Sarah was
half Cherokee Indian. Charles and Sarah
were married circa 1830, possibly in Tenn.
At the time of the 1850 Census, the family was living in Smith
County. Living with the family at this
time was Mary Campbell age 100, this may have been the grandmother or possibly
the mother of Sarah. It is believed
that Charles came from North Carolina circa 1820 and purchases 605 acres in
Smith County. Charles once owned at
least 115 acres in Civil Dist. #11 of Smith Co, TN., part of which was sold to
his son Andrew. According to family
legend, Charles was a slave owner prior to the Civil War. The burial place of Charles and Sarah is not
known, possibly they were buried at the
family homesite near the community of Chestnut Mound. Rev. Ernest E. Blair, reports that Charles was buried on the
family estate in Smith County. This
family is said to have lived around Daylight, TN in Warren County before moving
to Smith County. Charles R. and Sarah
Blair had at least the following children:
I.) John C. Blair born Jan 1832 - died ?)(see following)
II.) Mary M. Blair (born c 1835 - died ?)

in TN
Born
Jan 1832 in TN, John married Oct 10,1872 (Smith Co, TN) Matilda Gooland who was
born June 11,1847 TN and died July 20,1903.
John was in Co. A. Pioneer BN. CSA during the Civil War. Both John and Matilda are buried at Dickens
Cemetery near Chestnut Mound, TN. Their

II.) Zillah B.
McCrary (c 1871 - ?)
III.) James L. McCrary (c 1873 - ?)

Shoemake Blair Family Pictures
Andrew C. “Andy” Blair, third child of Charles R. and Sarah
Sallie Campbell-Blair, was born May 19,1836 in Tenn. and married Aug 18,1861
(Smith Co, TN by L. Franklin, Justice of Peace) Margaret “Mary” Shoemake, the
daughter of William and Fannie Arnett Shoemake. See Chapter 15 for more

Margaret was born July 20,1841 in Tenn. and died May 3,1928 (Smith Co, TN). Andrew bought 115 acres in Civil Dist #11 of
Smith Co, TN from his father, Charles R. Blair, on Mar 24,1873. Andrew, nicknamed "Fox" because of
his sly and cunning business sense, was a Private in Co. B. 7th Infranty during
the Civil War. Andrew died Jan 16,1914
(Smith Co, TN), both he and his wife, Margaret, are buried in Dickens Cemetery
near Chestnut Mound, TN. Family legend,
as told by Minnie Lee Blair, says that “Mary” was a red headed woman with a
temper to go with it. A story is told
about the blue Coats coming to Andy and Mary’s house and were going to take
Mary’s chickens. As the story goes,
Mary went after them with a “choppin axe”.
Their children were:

Dec 1862 in Tenn. and married Jan 28,1882 (Smith Co,TN) Mollie Susan Austin who
was born Oct 1866 in Tenn. Carolyn
Blair, granddaughter of Minnie Lee Blair, states that Hat was married to Mollie
Shoemake. Smith County marriage records
show a W.H. Blair and Mollie Shoemake as being married Jan 5, 1886. It is possibly that William Hatton was
married twice, based on the birth date of his first child who was born Sept
1885. Possibly the first wife died soon
after childbirth, but this has not been proven. Death dates and burial site for "Hat" and his wife
Mollie are unknown. Their children:

The

Shoemake:
OUR FRIENDS GONE BEFORE
SHOEMAKER
(sic) Rev. Sidney s. Shoemaker (sic) was born on Hurricane Creek near the
present site of Maggart in Smith County, Tennessee, April 26,1843. When the Civil War Broke out he espoused the
cause of the Union and enlisted in the 5th Tennessee Cavalry United State
Volunteers. The Commander of this
regiment was Col. William Riley Stokes.
Brother Shoemaker (sic) was early given the rank of Corporal and in the
midst of danger and hardship he served his country gallantly through the
war. He was married to Miss Josephine
Gentry September 23,1864, and she bravely and lovingly shared his toils and
hardships and her devotion to him was marked all through his life. He was converted in 1865 and united with the
Methodist Episcopal Church. He soon
began to preach and for a long time he raised his voice in many congregations
and saw many sinners turn to God. He
had been a local Elder for a long time before he died, but was so afflicted
with Rheumatism that he was unable to preach.
He was one of the leading spirits in building the Methodist Church at
Maggart and when he moved to Bloomington he would not be contented until our
people were housed in a comfortable place of worship. No man will be more missed at Bloomington than Brother Shoemaker
(sic). Two of his children, Cordelia
and Martha Ella had preceded him to the heavenly world. He has left behind two sons and four
daughters. His sons, James and Monroe,
are prominent men in this section of the country. Caladonia (sic), the wife of Ben Blair Esq., Ardella, the wife of
Campbell (sic) Loman, who is a steward of our church, both are residents of
Bloomington. Minnie Velma, the wife of
Willie Julian lives in Knoxville, while Bertie, the wife of Morgan Brown
resides on Martin Creek in this county.
Bro. Shoemaker (sic) quietly passed out of this life into the life
beyond February 7,1908. He died as he
had lived with firm faith in Jesus Christ.
The writer held services in his home and presiding Elder, J.D. Harris
went with the bereaved family to Maggart where the body was laid to rest.
E.M. NUNALLY, Pastor
The following obituary notice for
Josephine Gentry Shoemake appeared in the May 1, 1913 edition of the Putnam
County Herald. (Source: Putnam County
Herald 1911-1913; Roll #203 - Vol. XI, No. 18, Page 2)
SHOEMAKE, JOSIE: Many hearts were
made sad when on Thursday morning,
April 17, 1913, God in his
wisdom called Mrs. Josie Shoemake to higher service. She had come from her home at Bloomington Springs to visit with
her children at Cookeville, was taken seriously ill and died within a week. She had every care and attention which
loving hands and medical skill could give but to no avail. Hers was a life of usefulness and good
deeds, through the 66 years of her life she was ever active in ministering to
those about her who needed help. She
had been a widow for several years, but bore her life of loneliness with as
much fortitude and cheer as anyone could.
All her children except one were with her to the end. She was unconscious for several days, and
left no dying testimony, but a life of service and Christian work is more
satisfaction to those she left. Two
sons and four daughters survive her.
Her remains were carried to Smith county to the old family burying
ground for interment.
