Within the past week the Defeated Creek community has lost two of its

old Confederate soldiers. Uncle Loss McCall died at his home last Thursday

after an illness of some time. He was 87 years of age, and during the Civil

War was enlisted as a Confederate soldier. He is survived by the following

children, William and Chas. McCall, Mrs. Kittie Carter, Mrs. Lizzie Law,

and Mrs. Mary Jones. He was a member of the Hickory Grove Methodist church and was buried at his home place after funeral services had been conducted by Rev. J. L. Smotherman.

Uncle Marlin Kemp died at his home near Defeated early this (Thursday)

morning after an illness of only a few days ago. He was 82 years of age,

was a member of the Primitive Baptist church, and was an old Confederate

soldier. He is survived by his wife and the following children, Johnnie,

Wade, and Burford Kemp, the latter of whom is a member of the Smith County

Court, and Mrs. R. L. Bullard, Mrs. Allen Powell and Mrs. Hubert Carver.

After funeral services had been conducted by Rev. Gholston the remains

were laid to rest in the family cemetery.

Both Mr. McCall and Mr. Kemp were honorable, upright and good

citizens, and numerous friends extend sympathy to the bereaved families.

With the death of these two it brings the total of the deaths of Smith

County Confederate soldiers up to four during the past week, the other two being Capt. W. B. Petty and Uncle Tom Hackett.
