Kemp, John Head  1858 – 1922

JOHN KEMP

John Head Kemp was born February 7, 1858. He was married to Miss Mary Jane Williams, January 11, 1882, to whom were born two sons, Charley and Edgar, both living near the old home. Brother John Kemp was well known and he was a true man indeed from every standpoint. He was among the most noble husbands, and a kind affectionate father. He and his family were greatly attached to each other, much more than the ordinary family. He was regarded as among the most honest men. He wanted nothing without paying fully for it. He was a good neighbor, and will be greatly missed.

The cause of his death was a fall of 23 feet from the top of a barn. The scaffolding broke and he fell. Everything was done for him that could be but he died under the care of the best doctors in Nashville. He professed religion and joined the Missionary Baptist church at Defeated Creek October 1900, and lived a devout member till death. He was always ready to help in the promotion of what was best for his church and community. He was at Gladdice Monday night at meeting and Brother Henry Oldham made a proposition that all who felt and knew they had a home in heaven waiting for them to hold up their hand and his hand went up. Then he and Brother Hall of Salt Lick were talking just before he fell and he said that everybody ought to be ready and that for some time he had been living so that if he were to drop off he was ready. Oh, what good testimony for a bereaved family to take comfort in. It can well be said that the family has lost a devoted husband and father, the church a good member and the community a good citizen. Sister Mary, you will have such a lonesome time but the good Lord will care for you. It will not be long till you will join him over there. Boys, be good and follow your good father's advice and you will be ready for the great day.
