Jones, John H.  1841 - ~1931

John H. Jones, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of
the Difficult section of Smith County, died at his home Saturday night.  He
had been in fine health up to a week before his death, being able to attend
church and to do some work about his home. He was born December 12,
1841, and was the son of Wylie and Mary Parker Jones. He was twice
married, his first wife having been Miss Sarah Meador who died twenty-seven
years ago. He later married Miss Ann Huddleston who survives. Two sons,
Edgar Jones of Nashville, and Eltie Jones of Difficult; one daughter, Mrs.
Mai Thomas of Willette, and two brothers Luther Jones, of Difficult, and
James Jones of Nashville, also survive.

Burial was held Sunday afternoon in the family graveyard near the home,
following funeral services conducted by the Revs. C.B. Massey and Calvin
Gregory.
The deceased was a member of Defeated Creek Baptist Church
for sixty-five years. He enlisted in Captain Ridley West's Company, 28th
Tennessee regiment and served during practically all the Civil War, having
fought at Shiloh, Chickamauga, Burkesville and other places.

Transcribers Notes:

In Hoke Holland West's book, "What's In A Name?" he states that James

[one of two surviving brothers of John H.] was James Richard Jones. Their
mother, Mary Parker b. 1818, was the daughter of Richard Parker, brother
of Lucy Parker West. Wiley Jones was born in 1816 in Smith County.
James Richard Jones married Cassie Letony West, d/o Isaac Dixon West
& Martha Williams & granddaughter of James Clardy & Millicent Sutton
Williams. Martha was the sister of my gg grandmother Mary Ann [Polly]
Williams, Mrs. Asa Kemp. James Richard died in Nashville, Tennessee May
21, 1942. He is buried in the Williams cemetery beside his wife, having died
at the age of 95. Cassie died November 5, 1922. They were married Oct. 28,
1880. They had one son, Arthur C. Jones who married Maud Kemp.

Luther Jones [the other surviving brother] was M.L. Jones who was married
to Gillie Hailey in 1879. She died Dec. 17, 1921. They had three boys and
one girl...who were living at her death, per her obituary.
Their son William Henry Jones was married to my grandfather's double first
cousin, Beulah J. Kemp [d/o of John Morgan and Virgie Allen Kemp] May 21,
1921. In her memory I present these obits of Henry's family.
Another son was Wiley Hailey Jones who died Aug. 05, 1966, at the age of
83. See his obit.
The other son was Charlie L. who was gassed in World War 1 and died March

20, 1925 from the results of the gassing. He is buried with his parents M.L [Luther]

& Gillie Hailey Jones in the Williams cemetery in Difficult. Luther Jones' second

wife Mary Dillon is buried there also. She died in 1939 at the age of 70. Luther

was born in 1857 and died in 1949.  He was 92.

John H. Jones signed my grandmother's U.D.C. application November 2,
1927 as having recommended her.  He signed his name and that he was in
Company H, 28th Tennessee Infantry. She, Nellie E. McCall Kemp, was the
granddaughter of Martha Frances Jones Searcy whose parents are believed
to be Richard Jones and Sarah Sneed d/o Priscilla Williams & William
Sneed & granddaughter of Tobias & Jemima Clardy Williams.
