HACKETT DIES AT HOME IN KEMPVILLE
Funeral services
were held yesterday at
The Rev. J. L.
Smotherman officiated at the services.
Pallbearers were eight grandsons of Mr. Hackett. They were Carl, Alden, and Erwin Smith of
Mr. Hackett was laid to rest beside the grave of Mrs. Hackett, who died six years ago, and a son, who died several years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Hackett celebrated their golden wedding anniversary about 10 years ago. Surviving are four sons: Eddie and Edgar Hackett, who continue to operate the general merchandise store of their father at Kempville, Leslie Hackett, undertaker at Kempville, and Willie Hackett, an employee of the State Highway Department; three sisters, Mrs. Zetta West of near Defeated, Mrs. Dave Smith of Carthage, and Mrs. C. W. Robinson of Kempville; a brother, William Hackett of near Defeated, a host of grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A steward and member of the Hickory Grove church for more than fifty years, Mr. Hackett was a valued respected citizen of his community, an ardent church worker, and was known for his kind deeds to all. The services were attended by an overflow crowd of mourners. His friends of the community were numbered by the scores.
Mr. Hackett retired from active business about twelve years ago after serving the community faithfully for a half century. It was said of him that he never turned away a needy person, and that persons to whom he had extended long credit repaid him years later.
The parents of Mr.
Hackett were Mr. and Mrs. William Hackett.
His father was known familiarly as “Buck” and lived his life in
Friendship Hollow on Defeated Creek in
Mr. Hackett held the office of Smith County Trustee for one term, 1897 to 1898. He was married in 1880 to Sarah Sircy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Sircy of Kempville.
