Canter, Parthenia Frances Matthews 1845 - 1916

Parthenia Frances Matthews Canter

Sister Parthenia Frances, daughter of Ben and Martha Matthews, was born Jan. 7, 1845 and died March 9, 1916, age 71 years, 2 months and 2 days.  She professed religion at the age of 14 and united with the Methodist church.  Later, however, she joined the Defeated Creek Baptist church, being baptized by Elder E. B. Haynie.  She remained with this church, until Mt. Vernon church was erected at which time she became a charter member of the Mt. Vernon congregation.  She was regular in attendance of all church meeting and was loved by all who knew her.

She was married to Levy Canter in 1878 and to them were born 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, one of the girls dying in infancy.  Besides the 3 children, Sister Canter is survived by 15 grand-children, one brother and many friends.  We are sure our loss is her eternal gain.  May we all strive by the grace of God to meet her in the sweet bye and bye.  Sister Canter lived a widow 26 years, and she was a widow indeed.  She was a good step-mother and practically raised 5 step-children, all of whom were almost as grief stricken on account of her death as was her own children.  She said she was ready to go and requested the writer to preach her funeral, which we tried to do in the presence of a large, weeping congregation.  I once was her pastor and learned to love her.  She was a true Christian.

Children, your kind and tender, loving mother has gone never to speak to you again in this world.  But we morn not as those who have no hope.  We expect to meet her over yonder, where the wicked cease troubling and the weary at rest.  Mother, we will miss you, but our memory will retain you still.  Bro. Matthews, it won’t be long until you will see her again.  Lord bless the bereaved.
