John C. Hesson Dies At Age Of 82
John Chesley Hesson, aged 82 years, one of the leading
citizens of Pleasant Shade, died at his home at three forty o'clock Saturday
morning, after several years of ill health. He is survived by his wife, the
former Miss Alta Duke whom he married October 9, 1904; one son, Fred Hesson,
also of Pleasant Shade; a grandson, Billy Clark Hesson, of the U. S. Navy, and
stationed at Key West, Fla., and two granddaughters.
Funeral services were held at
two o'clock Sunday afternoon by Rev. Courtland Wakefield, from Sanderson's
Cumberland Presbyterian church. Burial followed in Sanderson's Cemetery. The
deceased had been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church for more than
60 years. He was a teacher for a time and then carried the mail on Route one, Pleasant
Shade, from the establishment of the route in May, 1905, until 1916. He was
also a merchant for a number of years. Mr. Hesson was the only son of Clayton
and Martha Thomas Hesson. His grandfather, John Hesson, was killed nearly a
hundred years ago on the top of the Mima Gregory Hill, seven miles east of
Lafayette, when the horse Hesson was riding ran under a stooping tree in the
darkness of the night and carried his owner to his death. John Hesson, above
mentioned, was the son of Andrew Hesson.
