Gregory, a farmer of the Pleasant Shade section, died at a Nashville hospital
on Saturday night, passing away about ten o'clock. He was 78 years of age and
had been ill for some time. He was most probably a victim of typhoid fever. His
wife, the former Miss Tennie Smith, died about 35 years ago. He had 13 children
by her. Of this number only four survive. They are: Johnnie Gregory and Mrs.
Marshall Shoulders, both of R. 1, Riddleton; Nelson Gregory, of Castalian
Springs; and Mrs. Dortch Woodard, of Defeated; seven grandchildren, two
great-grandchildren; and two half-brothers, Walter Gregory, of near Monoville;
and John Gregory, of Old Hickory.
The remains were laid to rest
in the family graveyard at the home about three o'clock Sunday afternoon,
following funeral services conducted by Calvin Gregory. The deceased was the
son of Jabe Gregory, son of Little Bill Gregory, who was a brother of the
editor's great-great-grandfather, Jeremiah Gregory, who was a native of Chatham
County, North Carolina, and who arrived on Peyton's Creek in the fall of 1791.
The deceased had a large number of brothers and sisters who preceded him in
death: Judy, married James Nixon; Nelson, married Martha, daughter of Dob
Gregory; Russ*, married * Earps; Jane, married a Brimm; Margaret, married John
Bell Winkler; Henry, married a Winkler, a sister of John Bell; Eliza, married
John Smith; and Cinda, who married a Holliday. The deceased was a quiet, unassuming
man and was favorably known to numerous friends.
