She attended St. Agnes Academy and the State Female College while living in downtown Memphis. She later taught with her sister, Mollie, at their private school in Eads, TN near Hickory Withe, Morning Sun and the Brooks\u2019 plantation home in Fisherville. \u00a0<em>(See Brooks)<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\">Victoria married, ca. 1881,\u00a0<strong>Joel\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cJoe\u201d\u00a0<strong>Henry Smith<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(1843-1844 Tippah Co., MS &#8211; Sep 9, 1928 Memphis)<\/em>\u00a0and they lived in Hickory Withe, Fayette, TN during the 1880s. Joel and his father were from the Corinth, Tippah, MS area and had come to work on the home at the Brooks\u2019 plantation when he met Victoria. Joel served the Confederacy in the Civil War with Co. F 26<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Mississippi Infantry as a Bugler and was taken prisoner several times, including the Battles of Vicksburg and Shiloh. Joel\u2019s parents were probably\u00a0<strong>John M. Smith\u00a0<\/strong><em>(b. ca. 1812 GA)\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<strong>Florenthia Nabors<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(b. ca. 1816 SC)<\/em>. Joel is buried in Confederate Soldier&#8217;s Rest, Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis. Mattie Pearl graduated from Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, MS and taught at Macon-Andrew Business and Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical Colleges in Starkville. She is buried in Forest Hill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\"><em>Issue:<\/em><strong>\u00a0Patricia Powell\u00a0<\/strong><em>(b. 1909)<\/em>\u00a0joined the Marines during WWII. She became a meteorologist, was appointed Fish and Game Librarian for the State of California, and was sent to Uganda to set up that country\u2019s Fish and Game Library. \u00a0<em>Issue:<\/em>\u00a0Michael\u00a0<em>(b. 1945)<\/em>.<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\"><strong>Frances Brooks<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Powell<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(25 Oct 1916 Starkville, MS \u2013 17 Nov 2001 Memphis, TN)<\/em>\u00a0married (1)\u00a0<strong>Francis Aloysius Corley<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(1909-1947)<\/em>\u00a0of Cleveland, Ohio. He died after WWII as a result of illness contracted during his service in the Army as a communications specialist. \u00a0<em>Issue:<\/em>\u00a0<strong>Patricia Dayle Corley<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1944)<em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Issue:<\/em>\u00a0<strong>Darian Cristine Corley<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1973).\u00a0 Frances married (2)\u00a0<strong>Colley Burnett<\/strong>\u00a0of Geneva, NY.\u00a0<em>\u00a0Issue<\/em>:\u00a0<strong>Peter Bruce Burnett<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(b. 6 Jan 1950)<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<em>Issue<\/em>:\u00a0<strong>Tonya Denise Burnett<\/strong>. Frances Powell received her B.S. from Memphis State University and her Physical Therapist\u2019s Degree from Duke University. She was Chief of Therapy at Les Passes Developmental Center in Memphis for over 30 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Joel Victor Smith<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">(1886-1978)\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">married\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Addie H. Atkins<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0and was a Yard Inspector for the IC Railroad. He is buried in Forest Hill, Memphis. No issue.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\"><strong>Vivian Brooks Smith<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(31 Dec 1887 Hickory Withe, TN \u2013 21 Feb 1970 Memphis)<\/em>\u00a0married\u00a0<strong>Vessie Aline Anthony<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(21 Sep 1889 Collierville \u2013 1 Mar 1932 Memphis)<\/em>, daughter of\u00a0<strong>William<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Anthony<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Molly<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Bickers<\/strong>. Vivian worked for the railroad, as a Cotton Classer, and as a Salesman. He is buried in Fisherville Cemetery (Baptist Church). Vessie is buried in Memorial Park. Vessie came from a long line of early Virginia families who were instrumental in the development of our young county: Michie, Pleasant, Randolph, Tarlton, Winston, and Woodson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Maj.\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">William Walter Smith<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWillie\u201d\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">(1889\u20131974)<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0was in the National Guard in WWI and was a Major in WWII, stationed in Alaska.\u00a0 He was a Shelby County Trustee Officer. He married\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Emma<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Miller<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. No issue.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\"><strong>Kingston Wyatt Smith<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWyart\u201d\u00a0<em>(b. aft. 1890)<\/em>\u00a0He was a carpenter and worked as a foreman at a door and window framing company in South Memphis until his retirement. He did not marry.<\/span><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\"><em>Issue of Vessie Anthony and Vivian Smith<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\"><strong>Mary<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Victoria Smith<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(15 Dec 1908 Eads, TN \u2013 27 Jul 1998 Raleigh, NC)<\/em>\u00a0married\u00a0<strong>Verble<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Raymond Peeler\u00a0<\/strong><em>(24 Aug 1903 Covington, Tipton Co., TN &#8211; 5 May 1964 Alexandria, VA)<\/em>\u00a0on 31 Dec 1931 in Memphis. Verble was the\u00a0son of\u00a0<strong>William Wesley Peeler<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(17 Mar 1870 &#8211; 4 Aug 1937)<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Minnie Bell Francis\u00a0<\/strong><em>(3 Nov 1873 &#8211; 30 Mar 1949)<\/em>\u00a0who married 14 Aug 1890 at Bride, TN. William and Minnie are buried in Covington, TN. Verble apprenticed at\u00a0<strong>S.C. Toof\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Co.<\/strong>\u00a0and worked there until the beginning of WW II.\u00a0 He then trained to be a helicopter mechanic. The family moved to Mobile, AL where they remained throughout the War.\u00a0He returned to the engraving business and the family lived in Salt Lake City, Utah and Washington, DC.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Issue:<\/em>\u00a0Three daughters and one son.<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #000000;\"><strong>Henry Wyatt<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Smith<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(14 May 1911 \u2013 11 Feb 1979)<\/em>\u00a0married\u00a0<strong>Emma<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Johnson<\/strong>\u00a0and was in the Army in WWII. \u00a0No issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Elsie<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Ray Smith<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">(b. 8 May 1913)<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0married\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Orville<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Chester<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Vann<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, Jr.<\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/strong><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">(30 Oct 1912 Shelby, TN &#8211; 4 Nov 1987 Shelby, TN)<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0on 7 Apr 1934 in Marion, AR.
