Brimstone:
mountain homeplace of the Griffiths
Only a few families live now in what is known as "the head of
Brimstone" and no one lives where the old home places were around the
mountain tops. Only a few chimneys and fruit trees mark where the subjects
of this story lived and raised their families. But most of the remaining
families can trace their ancestors back to Revolutionary War Joseph
Griffith.

Isaac Griffith's Response to
Confederate Veteran's Survey
The following information was provided by Toby Turner.
ISAAC GRIFFITH (ABRAHAM2, HOWELL1)19
was born March 5, 1720 in Richland, Pennsylvania20.
He married (1) MARY ANN BURSON21
November 1744 in Buckingham MM, Bucks County, Pennsylvania22,
daughter of JOSEPH BURSON and RACHEL POTTS. She was born April 9, 1721 in
Gilbert's Manor, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania23,
and died Bet. 1769 - November 27 1773. He married (2) ANN ROBERTS24,25
November 27, 1773 in Loudoun County, Virginia26,
daughter of OWEN ROBERTS and JANE WILLIAMS. She died Aft. 177326.
ISAAC and ANN continued to reside in Richland and Rockhill Townships until
1769, probably on two or three tracts acquired at different dates by his father.
The will of ABRAHAM GRIFFITH, Sr., proved in 1760, indicates clearly that ISAAC,
a younger son, was the mainstay of the family at that time, as to him is
delegated the care of his mother, the sale of the estate, and the payment of
minor legacies. He acquired the homestead in Rockhill by deed from his brother
ABRAHAM immediately following the death of their father and apparently lived
thereon until 1769, when he took a certificate for himself, his wife, his minor
children, and his mother, to Gunpowder Monthly Meeting in Baltimore County,
Maryland.* This certificate is dated 2 mo. 16, 1769. His son-in-law, JOSEPH
SHAW, and family, followed them to Maryland in 1770, but returned to Richland
ten years later. ISAAC GRIFFITH and his family seem to have remained in
Maryland.
When MARY ANN died, ISAAC eventually married ANN ROBERTS BURSON which set off
a controversy as the marriage was considered inappropriate.
*In the "Friends' Intelligencer" of 12 mo. 15, 1823, the
following extract from Gunpowder Monthly Meeting records is given:
"Twenty-second of Ninth month, 1781, ISAAC GRIFFITH's paper condemning his
misconduct in marrying his former wife's brother's widow was read and was
satisfactory. The case was on hand for two years." (Perhaps it took the
Meeting that long to trace the relationship.) [Source: Early Friends Families
of Upper Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Clarence Roberts, page 214, 215]
However, I have found the following explanation of Isaac in Encyclopedia
of American Quaker Genealogy, Volume 6: "ISAAC, a widower, of Gunpowder
monthly meeting, Maryland and ANN BURSON, a widow, of Goose Greek particular or
preparative meeting and Fairfax monthly meting, proposed their marriage
intentions to Fairfax monthly meeting, which this Meeting refused to approve on
account that they were brother and sister by Affinity, she being his former
wife's brother's widow; the Meeting advised them to drop their intentions; but
they were reported to have married November 27, 1773 (in another way) and were
disowned May 28, 1774. ISAAC's children by his former wife (JOSEPH, JOHN and
JAMES) were received on certificate from Gunpowder monthly meeting, Maryland,
June 25, 1774. Fairfax men's meeting returned ISAAC's certificate to Gunpowder
monthly meeting for action and he was disowned by that Meeting. In 1781, he
asked for reinstatement which was approved by the quarterly meeting and he was
received on certificate from Gunpowder monthly meeting December 22, 1781
(although he had been living at Fairfax, he belonged to Gunpowder). " It is
further noted that his first wife was also named ANN and their eleven children
are mentioned by name (all of whom were received on certificate from Richland
monthly meeting, Pennsylvania by Gunpowder monthly meeting, Maryland on May 24,
1769. There is no clue to the maiden name of ANN BURSON (widow) who married 2nd
1773 ISAAC GRIFFITH above, whose 1st wife was ANN BURSON. [We know now that her
maiden name was ROBERTS.]
MARY ANN BURSON's date of death is estimated as follows: she was accepted
into Gunpowder Monthly Meeting in 1769 and her husband married ANN ROBERTS in
1773. Therefore, she died between those two dates.
For ANN ROBERTS, I've found the name ANNE DICKEY listed by CLARENCE ROBERTS
in Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Mr.
LECKEY also use the name ANN DICKEY, showing that BENJAMIN married her in
Loudoun County. These records show their children as: JAMES (born September 26,
1763 and serving in the War of the Revolution and marrying JANE ORLTON in 1788.
The children of BENJAMIN and ANN DICKEY are shown to be: WILLIAM, born June 21,
1789; JOHN, born December 15, 1790; BENJAMIN born September 30, 1792; ELIZABETH,
born July 19, 1794 marrying a FISHER; JOSEPH, born November 23, 1796, marrying
his distant cousin, MARGARET; RACHEL, born December 13, 1798 marrying a DENMAN;
ANN, born December 5, 1800 marrying a CHEYNEY; JAMES, born December 3, 1802; and
TAMOR, born January 22, 1805, marrying a CHEYNEY. [Source: Genealogical
Records of Blackledge, Burson, Carter Families, compiled by Howard L. Leckey,
page 59]
In November, 1773, ANNE GRIFFITH, formerly BURSON, offered proposal of
marriage to Fairfax Monthly Meeting with ISAAC GRIFFITH, who being her brother
by former marriage, Friends thought them too near of Kin, declined their
proceeding. Nevertheless, they have since married out of unity with
Friends. [Source: Early Church Records of Loudoun County, Marty Hiatt,
page 125]
When ANN ROBERTS BURSON married ISAAC GRIFFITHS (whose first wife was MARY
ANN BURSON), the Quakers viewed this intermarriage of in-laws as inappropriate.
Consequently, ISSAC and ANN GRIFFITHS were dismissed May 28, 1774 from Fairfax
Monthly Meeting (Hinshaw). [Source: Burson Index, compiled by William
M. Marsteller, San Francisco, CA, 1995]
