The Thomas Family of
Scott County, Tennessee
(Compiled By Louise Carson)
(page 10)
KISSIAH married JOHN B. JEFFERS. Their children: DULCIE, NEVVA AND HOYAL . RANDY JEFFERS, recent owner of the Sears Catalog Store, is a son of HOYAL.
SARAH married WM. T. PENNINGTON; LUTHER PENNINGTON was their son and his children are: WM. HAROLD; MARTHA HELEN, who married PORTER RECTOR; LUTHER CLIFTON; ALMA, who married HUBERT BALDIN, head of West Coal Company; and DAN D.
ABNER THOMAS had two sister that we know of. One was SARAH, covered in the first part of the ABNER THOMAS story. The other was KIZZIAH, who married "JACK" PHILLIPS and lived in the Huntsville to New River area. (Terry research).
The Scott County census of 1850 shows JOHN PHILLIPS, born in Tennessee (1803) with wife KEZIAH, born in Virginia (1803). The PHILLIPS children at home were ELIJAH (1832); JOHN W. (1834); A.W. (1836); MARION (1839); MARY A. (1841); and ABNER (1844). (Son JASPER MARION (1839) listed in will; a son JONATHAN, probably already away from home in 1850).
In a separate house was THOMAS PHILLIPS (1823) and wife EASTER (1825), with two children: NANCY (1844) and ALCY (1846). The Campbell County marriage records list THOMAS L. PHILLIPS marrying EASTER TERRY on March 17, 1844. We know that EASTER TERRY was a daughter of JOSIAH TERRY. (Terry research).
By 1860 THOMAS PHILLIPS and EASTER list children as JOSEPH (1846); JOHN R. (1847); WM. J. (1849); WINEY S. (1852); JAMES G. (1854); ANNA (1856); and ELIJAH (1857). By 1870 EASTER has evidently died, and two more children are listed: NANCY (1863) and MELVINA (1866). By 1880 THOMAS L. has a new wife, JANE (1834); MELVINA is listed as EASTER M., age 14; ELIZABETH, 19; ELIJAH, 22; NANCY, 16; are all still at home; and THOMAS L.'s mother, KIZZIAH, is living with them. She is now 76 years old.
The 1900 census shows WILLIAM J. PHILLIPS (son of THOMAS and EASTER) age 51, living with his wife SARAH, age 48, and their sons PITNEY, age 23; and THOMAS L., age 21; and daughter ALBERTA. Both of these sons became doctors and were very well know in Scott County. Dr. THOMAS L. PHILLIPS (Dr. TOM, as he was called) had an office on Main Street in Oneida. Dr. PITNEY lived and worked in Robbins.
The daughter of JOHN and KISSIAH THOMAS PHILLIPS, MARY ANN, born in 1841, was married to JAMES SEXTON on October 2,1862. They had one son, JAMES SEXTON, born 1863. On December 5,1865, she was married to HARRISON REED. The 1880 and 1900 census records show the children as: ARMELIA, married to JOHN CROSS; ALEMISIA; ARMENIA; ALDONIA; and ARMONIA.
The will of JOHN S. PHILLIPS, Sr., dated 31 May 1876, probated 7 August 1876, in Scott County, lists his beloved wife KISSIAH; his children: his son JOHN W.; his youngest son ABNER; his son JASPER MARION; his son THOMAS L.; the heirs of his deceased son, JONATHAN; and his daughter MARY ANN REED and her husband HARRISON REED. He does not mention his sons listed in the 1850 census as ELIJAH and A.W. Perhaps he had already given them their share, or they could have died without heirs.
There is a will listed for ELIJAH PHILLIPS, dated September 1878, probated 7 January 1879, listing LEVI PHILLIPS; EASTER SEXTON (wife of JULIN SEXTON); KIZIA ANN NEWPORT (wife of W.A. NEWPORT); and to my son JAMES L. PHILLIPS. Each person named give 1/16 of estate.
This ELIJAH, who died in 1878, could possibly be the son of JOHN PHILLIPS, Sr., since he had a daughter named KEZIAH (his mother's name) and also one named EASTER.
