Joseph Johns and family

Name: Joseph B. JOHNS
Birth: 23 JAN 1776 in Buckingham Co., VA
Death: 8 NOV 1839 in Rutherford Co., TN

Joseph B. Johns is my ancestor (Estelle Wright Hall).   Some of the information I have on his children came from an old photocopied copy of "History of the Rucker Family" by Edith Rucker with penciled in notations, some made by my mother Ida Lee Johns Wright.  Some information came from an online researcher, Bob Newsome, and other items from records found by me in Rutherford Co., TN.

Joseph B. Johns came to Rutherford Co., TN from VA.  Joseph B. Johns settled in Tennessee in 1801.  He lived briefly in Giles Co., TN and then settled in Rutherford Co., TN.   He is listed in Rutherford Co. census in 1820 and had a son born in TN in 1802.  Edith Johns Whitley Rucker has his middle name being Barksdale.  Bob Newsome, a Johns researcher, believes the Barksdale name was on Elizabeth Vaughns family side and therefore was probably not a Barksdale Johns until their son.  Perhaps his middle name was Benning or Benjamin.  He has a grandson named Joseph Benjamin Palmer.

He served in the War of 1812.  He enlisted 10 Dec 1812 and served as a private Captain Newtons Co., Col. Wm. Halls Regiment of West TN Militia 12-10-1812; and private in Capt. Nathan Davis' Co. in Regt. under Gen. Andrew Jackson, 12-18-1813. These records were taken from microfilm rolls RG94, a total of 234 rolls of film.  Direct Data Capture.  War of 1812 Muster Rolls, (database online) Orem, UT, Ancestry, Inc. 1999.  http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jfrg/johns/f30.htm.  Joseph Johns, Davis' Battalion, West Tenn. Mil Ind. Rank Pvt.; Disch Rank PVT. Roll 111, Box 602.  Joseph Johns, 1 Reg't (Hall's) Tennessee Vols, same rank, roll and box as above.

Betsey Vaughan/Vaughn m. Joseph Johns, Halifax Co., Mar. 11, 1801. B/M: William Vaughan. Consent of William Vaughan, Jr. for his daughter. (Bob Newsome)

A land grant in August 183l to Joseph B. Johns for 71 acres in Rutherford Co.

A Joseph B. Johns listed in deed of Baptist church on East Fork of Stones River (can't make out the date).

General Joseph B. Palmer is a grandson of Joseph B. Johns.

He and wife Elizabeth are buried on property sold by Ernest Johns to Jack Lane in 1962 located at end of Lane Rd. off Dunnaways Chapel Rd off Jefferson Pike going toward Lascassas from Walter Hill intersection of 266 and 231 No. of Murfreesboro, TN.  in corner of lot behind old home place. (Source:  Estelle Hall has seen the graves.  These graves are not where they are reported to be in several books located in the library at Murfreesboro, TN or on the map of Rutherford Co.)

Joseph B. Johns settled in Tennessee in 1801. He lived briefly in Giles Co., TN and then settled in Rutherford Co., TN.
He purchased land on E. Fork Stones River and at his death owned about 1,000 acres.

This grave site is located on private property. There are 3 stones. One without engraving is broken in many pieces. The two with the inscription are broken from their base but the inscription part is intact. They were laying on the ground covered by weeds. They are currently leaning against a fence. It is incorrectly listed in several publications as being west of Walter Hill on 266. The descriptions incorrectly put it on property that was owned by my grandfather Will Boone Johns. With the help of Ernest King Johns and my uncle Hascal Johns I was able to locate the site of the graves off 266 East. Traveling from Murfreesboro, TN on 231 No. Travel about 10 miles to the intersection of 231 and 266 at the Walter Hill intersection. Take a right onto 266 East towards Lascassas. Travel 2.1 miles to Dunnaway Chapel Rd.(Kings Chapel Baptist Chruch). Take a left and travel 1.3 miles to Lane Rd. Take a left on Lane Rd. and travel .06 mile to bridge over creek. The graves are located approx. 300-400 yds. N.W. in the corner of a fence line behind the old home. The land was owned by a Johns descendant until the 1960s when it was sold to Jack Lane. (Joseph B. Johns ggrandson Earnest Johns) There is a new brick home built on the property and the old house is scheduled to be torn down spring 2001. Standing at the bridge looking toward the new home the grave sites are approx 100 yds. to the right.

According to the old typed genealogy I have it states "This Major Bible shows that Joseph B. Johns died Oct. 8, 1839".  On the gravestone it gives November 8, 1839 as the death date.  Age 63 yrs., 9 mos., 10 days.  According to the Gedcom Date Calculator that would make him born Jan. 29, 1776 instead of Jan 23.  For Elizabeth the stone gives May 26, 1844 as date of death.  Age 65 yrs., 9 mos., 17 days.  That would make her date of birth Aug 10, 1778 instead of Sept 9, 1779

This last $30.00 is the money that my mother gave me to give to Isaac Johns.

Thomas Johns produced a commission and took the oath as Ensign of the County Militia. State of Virginia, County of Pittsylvania. Mrs. James S. Jones of Chatham, VA being duly sworn, reposes and says that the foregoing two items are true to the best of her knowledge and belief and that she personally copied the same from the records. Subscribed and sworn to before me this 5th day April 1838.
Signed: M. E. Allen, Notary Public.

I had Mrs. Jones send me the above record of service of Thomas Johns, at which time I did not know that I was going to visit that county, but in less than one month after Mrs. Jones sent me the above service record of Thomas Johns, I visited Pittsylvania County and rechecked the record myself. It is as found:

This from Bob Newsome, Johns Family History Assoc.  Susan Chambliss is the webmaster and Bob maintains the Johns GEDCOM:  Garterhood Glover and Elizabeth Glover were sisters and the daughters of Samuel Glover of Buckingham Co., VA.  These sisters married brothers!  Your Garterhood married Thomas Johns and they moved to Pittsylvania Co., VA.  Elizabeth Glover married Thomas' brother John Johns.  They lived in Buckingham Co., near New Store, and had a large family.  Glover Johns (Susans' ancestor and the father of John Jay Johns of the Journal) was a son of Elizabeth Glover and John Johns, thereby making Glover Johns a first cousin of your Joseph B. Johns.  Actually they were double first cousins.
To make it even more interesting, another brother of your Thomas Johns and Susan's John Johns was William Johns, Jr. of Buckingham Co., VA.  William Johns, Jr. married Ann "Hannah" Glover of Buckingham Co. who was a cousin of Garterhood and Elizabeth Glover !!!!!  William Johns, Jr. and Hannah Glover had 3 sons:  Edmund Glover Johns, Abner Johns and John Johns....of course these are the Johns brothers who also settled in Rutherford Co. and for whom you so wonderfully supplied me with records.  Abner, as you know, married Susan Johns, daughter of his first cousin Joseph B. Johns.  Therefore, Abner and Susan not only shared the Johns connection, but also the Glover connection.  Amazing, isn't it.
Back to Susan's Glover Johns.  In or about 1832, Glover moved from Buckingham Co., with all four of his children, to RUTHERFORD CO., TN.  Glover's wife had recently died and two sons were young men...he also had a young daughter and John Jay Johns who was the youngest child and about 14 years old.  Glover's daughter Mary Elizabeth married William Cowan in Rutherford about 1833-1834.  I feel certain William Cowan must have been related to Varner Cowan, 2nd husband of Susan Johns.  Glover Johns and his family only stayed in middle TN for several years and moved on to Mississippi.  Mary Elizabeth and Wm. Cowan moved to Memphis.

Glover Johns died shortly after the family moved to MS.  John Jay Johns went to college in Ohio and ended up living in St. Charles, MO.  Some of his descendants were pretty distinguished.  One son was the managing editor of the major newspaper in St. Louis and a grandson was the famed poet Orrick Johns and a great grandson, Skip Johns, recently retired after being a senior advisor in the Clinton Admin.
My ancestor Jesse Johns was a brother of your Thomas Johns and Susan's John Johns.  He didn't marry a Glover...one of the few Johns brothers from Buckingham Co. who didn't!
