Sir,
I have a son whom I wish to obtain a place in the Military Academy. I will state his age and other qualifications. His name is William A. Nimmo, he will be 16 years of age on the 31st of December next, he is five foot and eight inches in height and weighs one hundred and twenty five or thirty pounds, and is very healthy, has never been subject to any disease, nor has he had any bones broken, or joints sprains, or dislocated and from every appearance at this time he probably will make a very stout man. He reads well, spells well & write a legible hand, I think can solve all the questions in arithmetic which he studies, is a tolerable grammarian, has a very good knowledge of geography, has some knowledge of mathematics, and natural philosophy, and I have no hesitation in saying that his is a youth who will conform to any rule or regulation in any instruction in which he may be placed in as I have endeavored to install unto him principles of honor and virtue. He has never had an opportunity of mixing much in Society, as I have been obliged to keep him at home to work on the farm to assist me in procuring subsistence for my family, as I have had no other help. He has been for the last four years the most of his time laboring on the farm which I hope will be no disadvantage to him. My residence is in Robertson County, Tennessee and I expect to remain there. I shall apply to the Hon. Cave Johnson to whose district I reside to speak to you upon the subject. If there were any necessity to have testimonials of the boy's character I could easily furnish them, but I found no such requisition in the regulation furnished me. My particular reason for wishing to have my in the academy is theat he may be qualified to render service to his county in case of mud. I have stated his age and other qualifications. I believe precisely and upon examining his claim if vacancy occur you should think fit to approve him. I shall take it as a very singular favor. Your Obit Servant
