     August the twenty sixth one thousand eighteen hundred and eight. To all Christian people unto whom this present writing shall come, I John Chowning of the State & County aforesaid send greeting – Know ye that I the said John Chowning for divers good causes, and valuable considerations me hereunto moving, have given & granted & by these presents do give, grant & infirm unto my beloved children, hereafter to be named.
     To Wit: First of all I give to my daughter Jean Payne, one black & white cow, & one black & white heifer, two years old next spring, also one Iron pot.
     Secondly, I give to my daughter Sarah Holeman, one cow.
     Thirdly, I give to my son Thomas Chowning, one hundred acres of land out of said tract of land, whereupon I now live.
     Fourthly, I give to my daughter, Elizabeth Choat, one heifer three years old next spring, also one cotton wheel.
     Fifthly, I give to my son John Chowning. One brown bay horse three years old next spring, also one hundred acres of Land out of the said tract of land, whereon I now live.
     Sixthly, I give to my son Robert G. Chowning, one hundred acres of land, out of the said tract of land whereupon I now live, also one sorrel mare five years old next spring.
     Seventhly, I give to my daughter Letishia Chowning two old horse, one a sorrel & and the other a gray, also three cows, one feather bed, one bolster, one sheet, one bed quilt, one yarn blanket & two rose blankets, also one Dutch oven & lid, also one weaving loom & three stays, & two smoothing irons and one iron skillet, also one cotton wheel & one pair cotton cards, also our walnut chest also all the diessih furniture belonging to the house also our iron tea kettle.
     Eighthly, I give to my son Richard Chowning one hundred acres of land that being part of tract of land whereupon I now live, to be laid off so as to include my present improvements, also one Negro man slave by the name of Will, also one horse, three years old next spring, also one young sorrel mare two years old next spring, also al my stock of hogs, also two sheep, also four axes & three mattocks, tow plough hoes, two iron wedges, two chisells, one sizing gauge, two screw augurs, one hand saw, and drawing knife, one kittle & two pair of pot hooks, one skillet, two pewter dishes, also one feather bed, one bolster, two pillows and two pillow cases, one sheet, one counter pane, two rose blankets, also all my presents crop, consisting of corn, oats & cotton, that now on the premises where I now reside, also two pair of drawing chains, also three cleavises & pins also four working hoes also two looking glasses, & tow candle sticks, to have & to hold all & singular the said lands, goods, chattels and household stuff whatsoever of me the said John Chowning, unto the said Jean Payne, Sarah Holeman, Thomas Chowning, Elizabeth Choat, John Chowning, Robert G. Chowning, Litishia Chowning, & Richard Chowning to them, their heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, henceforth to them & each of their own personal use & uses thereof, and their with to do, order and dispose of at their own wills & pleasure as of their own personal goods & chattels free & peaceably and quietly, without any manner, of less trouble or denial of me the said John Chowning or any other person or persons whatsoever of all which promises I the said John Chowning have put the said Jean Payne, Sarah Holeman, Thomas Chowning, Elizabeth Choat, John Chowning, Robert G. Chowning, Letishia Chowning & Robert Chowning in full & peaceable possession by virtue hereof, In witness hereof I the said John Chowning have hereunto set my hand & seal this day & year first above written.
