{"id":1057,"date":"2025-12-29T02:02:02","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T07:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/roane\/?p=1057"},"modified":"2025-12-29T02:16:49","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T07:16:49","slug":"william-blair-will-1843-and-estate-inventory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/roane\/william-blair-will-1843-and-estate-inventory\/","title":{"rendered":"William Blair Will (1843) and Estate Inventory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by <strong>Jennifer Sparks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inventory of the personal property and cash with the notes of hand and accounts that <strong>William Blair<\/strong>, dec.d had on hand at the time of his dec.d.<\/p>\n<p>Eight feather beds and furniture and eight bed stead<br \/>\none clock<br \/>\none bureau<br \/>\none chest<br \/>\nfive tables<br \/>\none cupboard and cupboard furniture<br \/>\nTen chairs<br \/>\ntwo wheels<br \/>\none loom<br \/>\nthree trunks<br \/>\ntwo brass dog irons<br \/>\nten pieces of pot ware<br \/>\none candle stand<br \/>\none looking glass and one hundred and fifty bushels of corn.<br \/>\nTwelve bushels of wheat and some oats and thirty pounds of cotton. Nineteen head of cattle<br \/>\nThirty two head of hogs<br \/>\nEighteen head of sheep<br \/>\nsix head or horses<br \/>\nsome fodder<br \/>\nFive bee stands<br \/>\none cart<br \/>\nfive plows<br \/>\nthree pairs of shears<br \/>\none log chain<br \/>\nfour hogs<br \/>\nthree axes<br \/>\none saw and two augers<br \/>\nfour chizzles<br \/>\none set of showmakers tools and about fifteen hundred pounds of bacon<br \/>\none pare of steel yards<br \/>\ntwo kegs of nales<br \/>\none mattock<br \/>\nsome water vessels<br \/>\nsome plank<br \/>\none sythe and cradle<br \/>\none cutting box.<\/p>\n<p>The above property was specifically divised to the widow with the exception of three horses otherwise divised,<\/p>\n<p>one note of hand on <strong>Arch Bacon<\/strong> for one hundred and thirty three dollars and twenty five cents in silver due the 13th day of Sept 1842 good.<\/p>\n<p>One note of hand on <strong>Hugh<\/strong> and <strong>Lyle<\/strong> forty six dollars and twenty five cents due 23rd day of February 1843 good.<\/p>\n<p>One note of hand on <strong>Hugh<\/strong> and <strong>Lyle<\/strong> for twenty five dollars and due the 6th day of March 1843 good.<\/p>\n<p>One note of hand on <strong>Bill Carmichael<\/strong> for two hundred and forty nine dollars due the 8th day of January 1843 good.<\/p>\n<p>One note of hand on <strong>J. Carmichael<\/strong> for sixty three dollars and seventeen cents due the 5th day of February 1842 good.<\/p>\n<p>One note of hand on <strong>John Blair<\/strong> for one hundred and four dollars due the 5th day of Nov 1841 good.<\/p>\n<p>One note of hand on <strong>John Hob,t<\/strong> one for fifty seven dollars and ninety two cents due the 8th day of May 1842 good.<\/p>\n<p>One note of hand on <strong>John B Edwards<\/strong> for fifty dollars due 10th day of Sept 1828 good.<\/p>\n<p>But specifically divised to his wife<\/p>\n<p>do to for four hundred and ten dollars in silver<\/p>\n<p>do to twenty seven dollars and fifty cents in gold<\/p>\n<p>do to twenty dollars in Alabama money to one account on <strong>Hugh<\/strong> and <strong>Lile<\/strong> for seventy two bushels of corn at two shillings per bushel $23.76<\/p>\n<p>do <strong>Hughs<\/strong> and <strong>Lyle<\/strong> by account good<\/p>\n<p>Returned by as executors of William Blair Dec.d<br \/>\nThis 3th day of April 1843<\/p>\n<p>Sworn to in open court<br \/>\n3th April 1864<\/p>\n<p>AL <strong>Grune<\/strong> clk<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Blair<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Vincent Blair<br \/>\n<\/strong>Executors<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>In the name of God amen.&nbsp; I <strong>William Blair<\/strong> of the county of Roane and State of Tennessee, being weak in body but blessed by God being sound in memory and also in judgment do make and acknowledge this to be my last will and testament.<\/p>\n<p>First if I should please God to take me out of this world, I recommend my soul to him who gave it to me and my body to be decently buried.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, I give and bequeath to my loving wife all of my house hold and kitchen furniture and all of the grain I have on hand and all the stock I have on hand for the use of the family and if any of the family leaves her she is to give them what she may think proper and I leave her all my farming utensils whatever.<\/p>\n<p>Thirdly, I do bequeath to my daughter <strong>Rachel Eldridge<\/strong> thirty dollars in cash and twenty dollars I loaned her.<\/p>\n<p>Fourthly I do bequeath to my daughter <strong>Polly Edwards<\/strong> the note I have on <strong>John B Edwards<\/strong> for fifty dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Fifthly, I do bequeath to my daughter <strong>Franky Carmichael<\/strong> fifty dollars is cash.<\/p>\n<p>The land that I bought from <strong>Charles McClung<\/strong> in Monroe County and deeded to my son <strong>John Blair<\/strong> and my son <strong>James Blair<\/strong> I consider as equal (?) between them and my other two sons.<\/p>\n<p>Seventh I do bequeath to my son <strong>Venice Blair<\/strong> seven hundred dollars and one bay horse and one black colt.<\/p>\n<p>Eight I do bequeath to my daughter <strong>Jane Blair<\/strong> one hundred dollars in cash.<\/p>\n<p>Ninth I do bequeath to my daughter <strong>Elizabeth Blair<\/strong> on hundred dollars in cash.<\/p>\n<p>Tenth I do bequeath to my daughter <strong>Martha Ann Blair<\/strong> one hundred dollars in cash.<\/p>\n<p>Eleventh I do bequeath to my wife the plantation I now live on during her natural life and at her dec.d I bequeath it to my son <strong>Hugh Blair<\/strong> after the death of my wife but still reserving to my daughters <strong>Jane Blair<\/strong> and <strong>Elizabeth Blair<\/strong> and <strong>Martha Ann Blair<\/strong> my daughters their support and home on the said place during their life or till married and further bequeath to my wife one hundred dollars in cash.<\/p>\n<p>Twelvth I do bequeath to my son <strong>Hugh Blair<\/strong> one gray filly.<\/p>\n<p>13. I do bequeath that all my debts and burial expenses be paid first and as soon as the notes of hand I have on hand with the cost be collected my executors is to pay over to my legatees according to the bequeaths and if there is any money on hand after paying them it is to be paid over to my wife and she is to divide it equally between my daughters <strong>Jane Elizabeth<\/strong> and <strong>Marthy<\/strong> and my son <strong>Hugh Blair<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly I appoint my son <strong>John Blair<\/strong> and my son <strong>Vincent Blair<\/strong> executors of this my last will and testament.
