FRANCIS P. BLAIR died recently in San Francisco, Cal.; had been an influential editor of the Washington, D.C. GLOBE; in recent years content for farm in Maryland. [This man had not died; somehow a false report of his death had filtered back to Tennessee. His biographical sketch in APPLETON'S CYCLOPAEDIA OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY, volume 1, N.Y., 1891, page 280. HENRY HALFACRE born Newberry District, S.C., Jan. 2, 1799; moved with parents to Williamson Co., Tenn., 1808 and died there, Dec. 23, 1853; "successful in business."

 

February 10, 1854

Hon. STEPHEN C. PAVATT communicates to the editor of the State Temperance Sentinel, over his own signature, the facts of a most diabolical murder — perhaps a double murder — which occurred at Camden, Benton County, in this State, on Saturday, 21st day of January last, in a doggery. Two brothers, named Joseph and William McDaniel, on that morning entered a grocery together to drink. They did so, until both became quite drunk, when a quarrel ensued about a most trivial matter between them, when both of them drew their knives and cut each other all to pieces. One of them, who had only been married a few months, died of the wounds before he could get out of the doggery, and the other was in a most critical condition, with only a slight hope of his recovery. — Here is another voice crying in trumpet tones for the enactment of a Prohibitory law.

LABAN WALTERS died six miles north of Franklin, Tenn., June 29, 1854 aged 74 years, 11 months, 6 days [born July 23, 1779]; native of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia; came to Williamson County in 1818.

SARAH widow of Colonel Peter PERKINS died in residence of Mrs. Bethenia Figures near Franklin, Tenn., July 5, 1854. Missionary Baptist.

ANN D. widow of John A. MERRITT died ten miles south of Franklin, Tenn., July 2, 1854.

JOHN L. JETTON died a few miles east of Murfreesboro, Tenn., June 25, 1854; free mason.

WILLIAM HALLYBURTON "a man in the prime of life" died a few miles south of Murfreesboro, Tenn., June 25, 1854.

JASON son of James H. WILSON died July 1, 1854 aged about 18 years.

A slave man, DANIEL, belonging to Charles A. MERRILL died of cholera in Williamson Co., Tenn., July 2, 1854.

 

From the Nashville True Whig. Cholera at Fayetville. FAYETVILLE, June 26, 1854.           Deaths by cholera in the corporation, 10; immediate vicinity, 8; two miles off, 2; citizens of town after leaving town, 6 — total 29. There has not been less than 175 of the citizens of Fayetville in the limits of the corporation during the prevalence of cholera. No new cases this morning.           On Norriss's Creek, between this and Shelbyville, Dr. Martin died suddenly of cholera a few days since. I understand there are other cases in the same neighborhood. At Boon's Hill and vicinity cholera and flux are prevailing. On Pen Ridge between this and Huntsville, flux has been prevailing for several weeks. Yours, &c. R. P. SHAPARD.

RICHARD HOBBS, beaten and robbed, from which he died July 11, 1854. He had been killed by unknown party. He lived six miles from Franklin, Tenn.

JOHN STOKELY son of Rev. F. H. and M. A. DAVIS died Franklin, Tenn., July 15, 1854 aged 7 months [sic], 5 months, 14 days.

CHARLES ROCKETT son of P. M. and Sarah Ann NEAL died Haywood Co., Tenn., June 5, 1854 aged 9 months.

J. J. GARNER died Franklin, Tenn., July 25, 1854 aged about 35 years.

JOSEPH HUNTER died Columbus, Ohio, July 19, 1854 aged about 45 years.

MILDRED OTEY daughter of Major John C. and Fannie R. CARTER died July 27, 1854 in the 6th year of her age.

GARNER H. ALLEN died from gunshot wound, July 15, 1854, aged 21 years, 27 days [born June 18, 1833]; joined Baptist Church at Rock Spring, Rutherford Co., Tenn., September 1853 and joined the Arrington, Tenn. congregation, a new Baptist group.]

JOSEPH NINUS son of Josephus H. and Mary CONN died near Franklin, Tenn., Aug. 6, 1854 aged about 8 years.

Hon. EPHRAIM H. [HUBBARD] FOSTER died near Nashville, Tenn., September 6, 1854; well-known lawyer. [Foster was born in Nelson Co., Ky., Sept. 17, 1794; died Sept. 6, 1854; served in Tenn. House of Reprs., 1827-1831; 1835-1837; U.S. Senate, 1843-1845; veteran of War of 1812. Episcopalian]

JOHN T. WORD died DeSoto Co., Miss., of typhoid dysentery, Aug. 24, 1854 aged about 34 years; surviving were his widow and four children.

Resolutions of respect in memory of FRANKLIN B. HAYNES, recently deceased; by Masonic Lodge and mayor and aldermen of Franklin Tenn. (dated Sept. 19, 1854). He died in Franklin, Tenn., Sept. 18, 1854 of epilepsy aged about 38 years; survived by his widow and one child.

Colonel ALBERT GREEN youngest son of Colonel Nicholas Tate PERKINS, Sr., died Minden, La., recently, aged about 43 years.

Colonel SAMUEL SEAY born November 24, 1803; died near Triune, Tenn., August 22, 1854; his last words were, "I am happy, I am happy."

Colonel M. W. LINDSEY, Memphis lawyer, native of Knox Co., Tenn., died at his summer residence in Collierville, Tenn., Sept. 12, 1854.

Hon. GEORGE KREMER, former Congressman from Pennsylvania died Union Co., Pa., Sept. 11, 1854 in the 80th year of his age; the man who won notoriety for accusing Henry Clay of "selling his vote" for John Q. Adams for the presidency in order to be appointed secretary of state. [Kremer, Nov. 21, 1775-Sept. 11, 1854, a Congressman from Pa., 1823-1829]

JOHN REAMS died near Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Oct. 1, 1854 aged about 63 years.

SPENCER CLACK died near Pulaski, September 30, 1854. ["Major John Clack, with his son, Spencer Clack (born in Virginia, 1783) moved from Sevier County, east Tennessee, and settled about a mile west of the Court House on the Carter farm where his negro cabins were, early in 1808. "A BRIEF SKETCH OF THE SETTLEMENT AND EARLY HISTORY OF GILES COUNTY, TENNESSEE" by James McCallum, Pulaski, 1876, page 24]

In an altercation in Eaton, Gibson County, Tennessee, between the brothers, WILLIAM and THOMAS BUCHANAN and J. P. CALLAHAN, shoemaker, the latter shot and wounded WILLIAM BUCHANAN from which wound he died October 10, 1854. THOMAS BUCHANAN had then shot and killed CALLAHAN on Sept. 30, 1854.

Mrs. MARY BUCK died Franklin, Tenn., Oct. 15, 1854 aged about 60 years. Presbyt.

JOHN KENNEDY died Maury Co., Tenn., Oct. 16, 1854 in the 84th year of his age, leaving a widow, 18 children, 68 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren; native of North Carolina; moved to Kentucky, thence to Maury County. Father-in-law of Gilbert Marshall, Franklin, Tenn.

RACHEL wife of J. J. TOON died Columbia, Tenn., October 24, 1854.

GEORGE son of James H. WILSON, Williamson Co., Tenn., died Bon Air Springs, White Co., Tenn., Oct. 19, 1854, typhoid fever, in 21st year of his age.

JOHN W. NEELY died Williamson Co., Tenn., Oct. 20, 1854 in the 20th year of his age.

JAMES GOSEY died Williamson Co., Tenn., Oct. 3, 1854 aged 82 years, 7 months, 22 days [born February 11, 1772]; native of Lunenburg Co., Va., from which he moved to Tennessee in 1801; joined Methodist Church in 1803; husband and father.

Miss LOUISA M. ROBINSON died August 31, 1854 aged about 21 years.
