[His tombstone, headed with IHS "Gloria in Excelsis Deo," in old city cemetery, Franklin, Tenn. reads: HUGH DEMPSEY a native of Newbridge, County Kildare, Ireland Died Jan. 26th 1849 aged about 60 years. May his soul rest in peace. Unquote. The stone-cutter was Rule Hotchkiss, Nashville, Tenn.]

ANN ELIZA wife of Turner S. STONE died near Florence, Ala., Jan. 22, 1849.

Colonel ANDREW HYNES born near Bardstown, Ky., Dec. 1785; moved to Nashville, Tenn., 1809 where he became a prominent merchant; served in War of 1812; sometime adjutant-general of Tennessee; died near Nashville, Jan. 21, 1849.

SUSANNAH wife of Robeson GILES died Mar. 20, 1849 in the 29th year of her age; married August 9, 1843; native of No. Carolina.

Emigrants from Monroe Co., Ga., including 43 blacks (slaves) left there, presumably in January 1849, for Texas; reached New Orleans, where several died, including seven slaves (buried in one grave). The emigrants were James G. Powell (who died), wife and six children; L. Cowart (who died), wife and seven children; J. V. Walker, wife and five children; Mrs. [ ] Jones; Henry Hill, Mrs. Hill and Rebecca Hill. They were stalled in/near Cotile, La. as of February 9, 1849.

 

May 4, 1849

ABRAM N. son of Major E. T. COLLINS, Randolph, Tenn. [on Miss. River] died near Richmond, La., April 3, 1849.

Rev. JAMES WHITSITT born Amherst Co., Va., January 1771; moved to Tennessee, 1792; baptized in his 18th year of age; ordained to the ministry, 1797 and became pastor of the Mill Creek Baptist Church where he remained for 49 years; died April 12, 1849.

 

May 11, 1849

PLEASANT M. MILLER died at his "new place," Gibson Co., Tenn., April 26, 1849, to which place he moved with his son, R. B. Miller; he was buried in Trenton, Tenn.; lawyer (from the Trenton BANNER, May 14, 1849). [There is no tombstone for him in Oakland Cemetery, Trenton.]

ROSANNA widow of James STEPHENSON died in residence of her son, Capt. William A. Stephenson, Williamson Co., Tenn., recently, aged 83 years. Her husband served in the American army during the Revolutionary War for 6 years, 4 months and 18 days but he had refused to apply for a pension. Methodist.

CHARLES FISHER, former Congressman from No. Carolina, died at Hillsborough, Miss., May 7, 1849.

FISHER, Charles, a Representative from North Carolina; born near Salisbury, Rowan County, N.C., October 20, 1789; educated by private tutors in Raleigh, N.C.; studied law; was admitted to the bar but did not practice to any extent; member of the State senate in 1818; elected as a Democrat to the Fifteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of George Mumford; reelected to the Sixteenth Congress and served from February 11, 1819, to March 3, 1821; declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1820; member of the State house of commons 1821-1836 and served as speaker in 1831 and 1832; member of the State constitutional convention in 1835; elected to the Twenty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1839-March 3, 1841); was not a candidate for renomination in 1840; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1844 to the Twenty-ninth Congress; declined to be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor of North Carolina in 1846; died in Hillsboro, Miss., while on a visit, May 7. 1849.

GEORGE PEAY died Williamson Co., Tenn., May 25, 1849 in the 93rd year of his age; veteran of Revolutionary War; present at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered to General Washington. [His war service pension application, S3673, reveals that Peay was born in Caroline Co., Va., January 19, 1757; moved to Williamson County in 1810.]

C.], July 15, 1849; she was buried in a metallic casket; would be buried beside her husband at Montpelier [in Orange Co., VA.]; aged 84 years. [DOLLEY PAYNE MADISON, May 20, 1768-July 12, 1849]

CHAPMAN JOHNSON died Richmond, Va., July 12, 1849 in the 71st year of his age.

A black slave woman, bound to the Hon. JOHN C. CALHOUN, So. Carolina, a native of Africa, was 112 years old and had 63 living descendants.

PETER W. CROUCH died Vicksburg, Miss., Sept. 17, 1849 aged about 49 years; native of Williamson Co., Tenn.

JACOB HALFACRE died Oct. 27, 1849 aged about 83 years; native of Germany; for four decades a resident of Williamson Co., Tenn.

GEORGE PARHAM died November 6, 1849 aged about 70 years.

Mrs. MARTHA ALLEN, native of Culpeper Co., Va. died in residence of her son, Sanford G. Allen, Williamson Co., Tenn., Nov. 18, 1849 aged 93 years.

ALEXANDER BLACK, native of Kentucky; settled in Giles Co., Tenn.; 1808 where he died Nov. 16, 1849 in the 72nd year of his age.

HENRY YERBY was murdered on his plantation at Old Town, Ala., Nov. 9, 1849, allegedly by two of his slaves who were then "burnt to death."

 

December 14, 1849

WILLIAM B. RAGAN, Hardeman Co., Tenn., died from arsenic poisoning, Oct. 30, 1849, allegedly by the slaves on Eliza S; Burrough's estate; surviving him were his widow and four children.

 

December 21, 1849

The remains of Captain GEORGE MAYFIELD would be buried at his late residence on Little Harpeth River, 8 miles from Franklin, Tenn., Dec. 23, 1849.
