Obituary of Rev. Howell Taylor:

        Mr. Editor — It devolves on me to record a few facts connected with the history of our venerable father in Israel, the Rev. Howell Taylor.
        He was the son of Edmund and Ann Taylor, and born on the 6th day of October, 1754, at Bowlingreen, Caroline county, in the State of Virginia. While but a youth his parents moved to Mecklinburg county, where he was raised, and continued to reside, except for a short period in Warren co., North Carolina, until he emigrated, in the spring of 1817, to the Western country, and settled in Montgomery county, Tennessee; from thence he removed, in 1826, to Haywood county, Tennessee, where he ended his long and useful life, at the house of his son Rev. John Y. Taylor, on the 30th on May last, being 90 years, 7 months and 14 days old, leaving a numerous posterity to weep his departure.
        His parents being highly respectable, and deeply pious, of course he received moral and religious training in youth. He, however, neglected those lessons, until he was about 30 years of age. His amiable wife, was converted by the labors of that distinguished lady, Mrs. Sarah Jones, and although she had some reasons to expect opposition from her husband, nevertheless she returned home and boldly announced the fact; he was not only pleased, but deeply convicted and commenced seeking the same blessing, and never rested until he found peace and pardon in believing.
        As a philanthropist, his benevolence was universal; as a gentleman, he was affable, courteous and kind; as a citizen, prompt in business, and punctual to meet all his engagements; as a patriot, loyal and obedient to the "powers that be," an ardent admirer of the American form of Republican government. As a husband, he was most affectionate; as a father, extremely tender; as a master humane and kind; but above all he was a ripe Christian, deeply versed theoretically, and experimentally in the things of God. His intellect was strong and vigorous, and acquirements substantial and respectable. His call to the christian ministry was clear and satisfactory, because divine; his preaching was plain and powerful, and as Methodism was then unpopular, for want of suitable houses of worship, he made his appointments and preached to multitudes in the groves. Many were awakened, and converted by his instrumentality, and no doubt will shine as stars of the first magnitude in his crown of rejoicing.
        Although he labored publicly, almost from the time of his conversion, it was not until the month of March, 1805, that he was ordained a minister in the church of God, and never would accept any higher office than that of deacon.
        Several years since his physical strength failed, and of course his public ministrations ceased; but his uniformly pious example, by Godly conversion shed a hallowed influence all around him.
        Exceedingly mysterious are the dispensations of divine providence, although his work was done, it remained for him to suffer the will of God: for several years he was the subject of deep affliction, and sometimes the most torturing pain, but he bore all with lamb-like patience, and unreserved submission.
        The closing scene was solemn and interesting, filled with the love of God, overshadowed with the divine presence; he conversed with rapture, on the subject of his approaching change. Said to his daughter--in-law, Mrs. M. Taylor, (who was his tender and vigilent nurse) that celectial messengers were about his bed; and among them he recognized his brother Edmund, who died in 1826. Thus "the chamber where the good man meets his fate, is privileged beyond the common walks of virtuous life, quite in the verge of heaven."
        At length his hour came, and with peace and joy he fearlessly launched away; and though "the voice of the prophet was hushed in the murmurs of the Jordan, the song of triumph was raised upon the other shore.
        From this imperfect sketch we would draw an inference. If God supported his faithful servant sixty one years in the field of battle, his grace will be sufficient to sustain us, whether we live long or die soon.

This old patriarch is buried in the Tabernacle cemetery, near Brownsville, Haywood County Tennessee, under a slab tombstone, for which see the next page, 57. Reverend Taylor first married in December 1778 to Susannah Young and these known children: SAMUEL ALLEN TAYLOR sometimes given as born in 1780 but his tombstone at Tabernacle indicates that he was born in 1779 as it states that he died February 8, 1835 "aged 55 yrs. & Some Months." Samuel Allen Taylor, who went by the second of his given names executed his last will, Jan. 15, 1835; it was probated in mid-June 1835. (Haywood Co. Will Book 1, pages 123-124; County Court Min, Book 1834-1840, page 202). JUDITH BURTON TAYLOR who married Archibald Green, Nov. 9, 1802; ANNE LEWIS TAYLOR, nicknamed Nancy, who married Samuel Jordan, Dec. 3, 1811 and died August 4, 1828. EDMUND TAYLOR born Feb, 13, 1785; JOHN YOUNG TAYLOR born Dec, 27, 1787; HOWELL TAYLOR, the younger, born Feb, 15, 1791; RICHARD TAYLOR born Jan. 21, 1793, (These children were drawn on a family tree devised by Robert Howell Taylor (1816-1881), grandson of Reverend Howell Taylor and exhibited at the Tabernacle gathering in 1881; also including a younger son, JAMES WESLEY TAYLOR who died young in Virginia.) Howell Taylor, the elder, and his son, John Taylor, and families, left Mecklenburg County, Virginia on March 7, 1817 for resettlement in middle Tennessee, Montgomery County, arriving there early in April, thereafter; the old man married his second wife, Rebecca — Becky — in Tennessee, November 13, 1817. (His first wife died March 27, 1810 and the second wife died November 1, 1830.) His son, Richard Taylor took the initial move to Haywood County in western Tennessee in February 1826, with his old father following him in late November 1826 and the other sons came out to settle near there with Edmund Taylor settling down, to the south, in Fayette County. Tabernacle, the Methodist meetinghouse the Taylors established on their land in 1826 has always been known as a Methodist place of pilgrimage in west Tennessee.

The Jordans had also come out to Haywood County but only temporarily as they returned to Montgomery Co., Tennessee in November 1834.

Howell Taylor had disposed of most of his temporal possessions late in life but he executed a last will and testament, May 6, 1836 which was probated September 1, 1845 (Haywood County Court Minute Book D, page 266); the original will was photocopied years ago before it disappeared from the Haywood County courthouse, as well as the will book (number D) in which it had been recorded. The copy of the original will, itself a public document, having been probated in court, has been reproduced in this publication on page 58.

In the name of Almighty God, I Howell Taylor of the County of Haywood & State of Tennessee do constitute ordain & appoint this my last will & testament in manner

& form following, viz.
        First & principally I give my soul to Almighty God & trust that through the merits of Jesus Christ to be accepted by him & my body to be buried as my executors shall direct & the minister who preaches my funeral to receive ten dollars.
        Item. I give to my son Edmund Taylor bed & furniture.
        Item. I give to my son John Y. Taylor my horse bridle & saddle, my little gun, books & my little household furniture.
        I give to my son Howell Taylor my desk & watch.
        I give to my son Richard Taylor my big gun.
        All the rest of my estate I give to be equally divided between my son Allen Taylor, my daughter Judith Green, my daughter Ann L. Jordan & my four sons above named.
        Lastly I appoint my sons John Y. Taylor & Richard Taylor my executors of which it is my will that no security be required on account of their executorship and do hereby revoke all wills heretofore made in testimony whereof i have hereunto set my hand & affix my seal this 6 day of May 1836.

Reverend LEVIN W. MORELAND, a Methodist local preacher, died Yell Co., Ark., April 1845; married March 1844.

KATHARINE A. K. TATE wife of Samuel F. Tate, Grainger Co., Tenn.; daughter of William and Mary P. McConnell, formerly of Huntingdon, Pa.; married Sept. 1844; died July 18, 1845.

On the morning of July 17, 1845, THOMAS L. CRITTENDEN and Colonel WILLIAM BOONE who were delegated so to do, had the remains of Colonel DANIEL BOONE and his wife removed from their place of burial on the farm of Harvey Griswold, Warren Co., MO, exhumed for reburial in Frankfort, Kentucky. Opening the graves, it was found that "the large bones were found to be perfect in size and shape but of a very dark color and so far decomposed . . . a number of small bones were rotten and could not be raised in form; the coffins were entirely rotten and gone except the bottom planks." [Rebecca Bryan Boone died March 11, 1813. Daniel Boone died September 26, 1820.]

JAMES M. LOWE sort of B. M. Lowe, died Huntsville, Ala., July 21, 1845 in the 17th year of his age. A tribute to his memory, by the Lafayette Society, LaGrange College, Ala., dated July 27, 1845 appended the notice of his death. He had been a student in this college.

INFORMATION WANTED. In the fall of 1831, EDMUND DAVIS left Pasquotank Co., N.C. under the care of John V. Chamberlane, going to Illinois or Indiana; his sibling, Devotion Davis, Somerville, Tenn., wanted information about his brother's whereabouts.

Reverend JOSHUA BOUCHER born western Va., Oct. 23, 1782; died Athens, Ala., August 23, 1845; moved in 1808 to Madison Co., Miss.; licensed as a Methodical local preacher about 1811; he labored faithfully among numerous circuit of the Tennessee Conference.

FRANCIS EPPS HARRIS son of Henry M. (died 1841) and Judeth Harris; born Madison Co., Ala.; died in Miss., July 3, 1845 in the 21st year of his age.

NANCY REEDER died July 26, 1845 in the 28th year of her age; four children. Middle Tenn.

NANCY E. JONES daughter of Samuel and Isabella Moore, born near Cynthiana, Ky., July 14, 1825; died Henry Co., Miss., August 11, 1845; married W. W. Jones, Feb. 10, 1842; an infant son.

FRANCIS LAFAYETTE GRAINGER son of James L. and Ellen Grainger died Springfield, Tenn., August 2, 1845 aged 16 months and 15 days.

WESLEY ELY died Yalobusha Co., Miss., June 30, 1845.

JAMES HUTCHINSON, Sumner Co., Tenn., died Marshall Co., Tenn., August 12, 1845 aged 52 years; five children.

ANN CONWAY died in Little Rock, Ark., July 9, 1845 in the 75th year of her age. Among her children were ex-governor Conway; General E. N. Conway and William Conway; all of Ark.

At a two-day religious gathering in Greenup County, Kentucky, three children of Mr. ARMES were killed when a large tree fell upon them, killing them immediately.

September 12, 1845

Tribute of respect for MILTON TULLY by the church committee, McKendree Methodist Church, Nashville, noting that he was born in Huntsville, Alabama, June 51, 1824; died Davidson County, Tenn., August 4, 1845; had come to Nashville two years ago to study medicine with a relative, Dr. J. P. Ford; he had been a close Bible student when a member at McKendree.

SARAH BROTHERTON born Guernsey but was taken by her parents to Manchester, England as a child; she married Thomas Brotherton, 1812; came to America; died in Nashville, Tenn., August 26, 1845.

Quoting in the context of a letter written by John Bayley from Newcastle-under-Lyne England, July 5, 1845, to Reverend L. M. Lee, is a description of burials in the City Road Chapel in London:

        The grave-yard, both before and behind the chapel, is crowded with tomb-stones. The most conspicuous among these memorials of departed worth is the tomb of the venerated Wesley. It is a plain tomb, loftier than any of the others, and surrounded by an iron railing. In addition to the epitaph, which may be seen in the Life of Wesley, by Mr. Watson, the following memorials are inscribed on the tomb:

"This grateful record
Of the place made sacred by the mortal remains
of the venerable and apostolic
WESLEY
Was first erected Anno Domini 1701,
But re-edified and enlarged 1840,
(During the Centenary of Methodism)
At the expense and under the direction of his sons
and successors in the Christian Ministry,
The Methodist Conference,
In token of
their filial affection, reverence and love."

        On the opposite side of the tomb are the following records:
        "In this vault, with the remains of the Rev. Mr. Wesley, are deposited those of the following preachers:
        Mr. Duncan Wright, died May 13th, aged 55 years.
        The Rev. John Richardson, died Feb. 10th, 1792, aged 57 years.
        Mr. John Murlin, died July 17th, 1799, aged 77 years.
        Rev. Walter Griffith, president of the conference in 1823, died Jan. 30th, 1823, aged 63 years.
        On another side of the tomb, is the following:
        "Here also are interred the remains of Mrs. Martha Hall, sister of Mr. Wesley, who died July 19th, 1791, aged 85 years.
        "She opened her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue was the love of kindness." Prov. xxxi, 20.
        Next to the tomb of Mr. Wesley is one of a more humble appearance, surrounded by a plain iron railing, with the following inscription:
        "Sacred to the Memory of Adam Clarke, L.L.D., F.A.S., who rested from his labors August 28, ____, aged 7_ years. [HTML editor's note: year and age hidden in paper crease; age probably is 72]
        "Also to the memory of Mary, wife of Adam Clarke, L.L.D., who died December 26th, 1836, aged 76 years.
        "Also to the memory of John Wesley Clarke, Esq., who died Feb. 29th, 1840, aged 51 years."
        And thus, after their great labors and wonderful usefulness, the mortal remains of the venerable, holy, and apostolic ministers rest side by side

MARGARET FORBES daughter of Archibald McDonald; born Bedford Co., Va.; had moved with parents to Overton Co., Tenn.; married Samuel Forbes and moved to MO where she died, Cooper County, July 26, 1845 in the 69th year of her age.

MARGARET LEA born Sept. 19, 1799; died August 9, 1845; on July 10, 1845 her son, PORTER HENRY, died; two other sons and a daughter (resident of Alabama) survived her.

CHARLOTTE H. MOORE wife of Dr. William D. Moore; daughter of Thomas and Nancy Godfrey; born S.C., Feb. 13, 1798; joined Methodist Church, 1831; died Yalobusha Co., Miss., Aug. 15, 1845.

MARTHA DAVIDSON wife of William Davidson; daughter of Rev. Lemuel and Rebecca Brandon died August 3, 1845; two children. Middle Tennessee.

ELIZABETH RIGGEN wife of John Riggen, Kentucky Conference preacher, born Mason Co., Ky. April 16, 1796; married January 1812; joined Methodist Church, 1817; died Newport, Ky., August 14, 1845.

MARGARET CAROLINE ROZELL wife of Ruford A. Rozell, formerly of Rutherford Co., Tenn.; died near Memphis, Tenn., Aug. 13, 1845; six children.

HENRY T. ATKINSON son of Samuel W. and Nancy Atkinson, born Ga., Feb. 12, 1824; moved to Pontotoc Co., Miss., 1840, where he died May 29, 1845.

GEORGE WRIGHT died Trimble Co., Ky., June 30, 1845 aged 80 years, 11 months and 10 days old [July 20, 1764]; his wife had died in July 1833. "Brother Wright was one of the patriots that served in the war of the revolution." [His pension application (S31501) notes that he was born in Amherst Co., Va., 1763; moved to Greene Co., Tenn. and in 1816 moved to what became Oldham Co., Ky.; he drew a modest pension.]

ALBERT G. PARKER, Davidson Co., Tenn., died Aug. 31, 1845 in the 26th year of his age.

MARY M. COLLINS wife of William R. Collins, born Sept. 7, 1794; married Dec. 8, 1814; mother of fifteen children; joined Methodist Church, 1837; died of cancer, Aug. 10, 1845. Adams Co., Miss.

MELVINA HUBBELL died Bath Co., Ky., July 30, 1845 aged 19 years.

JAMES MORGAN, a Marylander, had married and he and his wife had an infant child when in their cabin near Bryant's Station on the Kentucky frontier, August 7, 1782, a party of Indians approached their cabin. Morgan hid his wife under the floor of the cabin

and took the infant with him, fearing it would cry and reveal the hiding place. Morgan reached his brother's place, left the infant there and returned to his cabin only to find that it had been burned to the ground but his wife had escaped and husband and wife were re-united, having managed to survive this hideous assault on their home.

        Mr. WILLIAM McFERRIN, the grand-father of the Editor of this paper, died recently in Marshall county, Mississippi; aged ninety years. The following letter dictated by the venerable man a few days before his death, was written down by Mr. W. Forbes, and directed to his grand-son, the Rev. William M. McFerrin, of the Memphis Conference. We might add much to what is said of this departed veteran, but we forbear. He lived to see all his children converted, and buried several of his large family, who died in the faith. His numerous posterity will rejoice that his last days were marked by the triumph of christian faith.

MARSHALL COUNTY, MISS., Sept. 19th, 1845.
        To William M. McFerrin, — I your aged grand-father, William McFerrin, being now in the ninetieth year of my age, and being in bad health, feel that the time of my departure from this world is at hand. And being desirous that you should preach my funeral after my death, I therefore, write to you a few lines, to give to you the outlines of my life, that you may be the better prepared to attend to this matter.
        I was born in the State of Pennsylvania, York county, in the year of our Lord 1755, and in the month of October. In the year 1765 my father removed to Virginia and settled in Augusta county, near to Stanton, where he remained 12 years. In 1774 the war began, and in 1776 I turned out a volunteer.
        I first fought the Indians under Col. Christy; and then the British under the command of Cols. Washington and Green. But believing there were other duties binding on me, I joined the church of God, and become a member of the family of Christ in my youth. I also married a wife in the year 1781. For many years after the war, I spent my time at home with my family, in cultivating the ground for their support. In the year 1809 I removed from Virginia to Tennessee, Rutherford County. In 1813 my wife died. About this time my children all married off and left me. But from that time until now I have found a constant and happy home with C. Curlee, Esq., who married my daughter Elenor. These my dear children have been my staff in old age and stays in times of greatest need. May heaven reward them, is my constant prayer. Amen.
        From Rutherford county, Tennessee, I removed with the above named children to Tipton county, Tenn., and remained there ten years. In 1840 we all removed to the State of Mississippi, Marshall County, where I now live, and expect to die, and that in a few days. For this world and all that in it is, — yea all that affects the senses of man, seem to be departing and getting at a great distance from me. Yes, the ten thousand cords that bind me to this world are breaking fast, — while eternity with all its spacious territory — with all of its expanded fields of delight, and grand and sublime scenes the Bible speaks of, are moving up to my door. I stand with rapture and look on; I calmly bid this world good night; and with joy invite the approaching world.
        After my death, and you have preached my funeral, I want you to send to John B. McFerrin, of Nashville, and have my death and the outlines of my life published in the paper, that all of my friends may hear of it. So farewell, until we meet in another world.

        Since the writing of the preceding part of this letter, your aged grandfather has departed this life. Esq. Curlee and lady have gone to Middle Tennessee on a visit, he came to my house to stay a few days, took sick and died. He perhaps had a small touch of bilious fever combined with old age.
        I was with him during his whole afflictions. From the time he was taken sick, he said he should die.
        During his sickness, his hopes were like pillars of fire, reaching from earth to heaven, and throwing light on the path that reaches from this to a better world.
        When his sufferings would become great, he would seem to hurry death to execute his office.
