"His hair was but slightly turned [graying], his face was smooth-shaven and free from the deep corrugations which mark advancing age and his eyes never accepted artificial aids." His appointments:
The appointments or his ministry were: 1835-36, junior preacher on Lexington Circuit; 1837, Staunton Station; 1838-9, Botetourt Circuit; 1840, Lewistown Station, Pa.; 1841, Lewisburg Circuit; 1842, Winchester Circuit; 1843, Front Royal Circuit; 1844, Baltimore City Station; 1845-6, Leesburg Station; 1847-8, North Baltimore Station; 1849-50, East Baltimore Station; 1851, Jefferson Circuit; 1852-3, Winchester Station; 1854, Loudoun Circuit; 1855-6, Exeter Station, Baltimore; 1857, Fayette Street Station, Baltimore; 1858-9, presiding elder Roanoke District; 1860-1, Charles Street Station, Baltimore. In 1861 Dr. Martin left Baltimore for Virginia, where he served through the years of the war. In 1862, he preached in Lexington, Va., and throughout Rockbridge County; 1863-5, preached in Lexington one Sabbath, and on the alternate Sabbath on Lexington District, with ten pastoral charges, serving without temporal support. At the close of the war it was his privilege to participate in the good work by which the Lexington Stations of the Baltimore and Virginia Conferences were happily united. In October, 1865, Dr. Martin went to Baltimore to open Eutaw Hall as a place of worship for Central Station. He was urgently requested to take charge of the newly-domiciled Church. But this call he felt constrained to decline. To his ear there was another call, louder and more earnest. This was to serve the impoverished Churches near Lexington. To this work he had been appointed, and to it he felt that his labor was due, though, so far as money was concerned, his services must be unrequited.
In February, 1866, the Conference met in Alexandria, and he formally united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was then appointed presiding elder of the Washington District. He found seven pastoral charges. The work of reorganization was before him. He served four years, and at the expiration of his term reported twenty appointments.
In March, 1870 he was appointed presiding elder to the Baltimore District, where he served four years; and in 1874 he was appointed to the Rockingham District, whence he was removed after one year’s service, and appointed to Staunton Station. The years 1875-8-years of notable prosperity –were spent in Staunton Station. The congregation increased until every part of the spacious house of worship was filled. The word was in demonstration of the spirit and of power, and many souls were added to the Church of those "being saved." In March, 1879, he was sent to the Rockingham District, which he served four years. Three years were then spent in the Winchester Station, two subsequently as presiding elder of the Winchester District; and then, in March, 1888, he was appointed to St. Paul, in the city of Baltimore, where his work ended; ended so we say, but it will still be prosecuted through the many agencies which, by the blessing of God, he was enabled to fit and inspire for holy service.
