EUDOXIA ESTILL (1794-1886)
In my "Recollections of North Alabama Methodism" occurs the following passage: "A little more than a century ago Daniel Boone had his little colony on the Kentucky River in what is now the great Commonwealth of that name. One beautiful morning in May three girls, by name Jemima Boone, Elizabeth and Fannie Calloway, were enjoying a ride in a canoe which was paddled by themselves. Seeing some beautiful wild flowers growing on the bank opposite, they boldly pushed their craft and landed near them. Before they had time to gather the flowers they were captured by a band of savage Indians. Westward the savages bore their precious prey, right through the trackless forest.
"Soon the alarm was given at the Fort, and a squad of young men, well armed, were quickly in pursuit of the fair prisoners. The girls, with great presence of mind, broke the bushes, scattered the leaves and branches, and one of them tore to shreds a linen handkerchief, and dropped it, piece at a time, to guide the brave men who they knew would follow them. The band of young men was led by Samuel Henderson, who was then engaged to be married to Miss Elizabeth Calloway. They were successful, and in less than two days, without the loss of a man or the injury of a girl, recaptured them and were on their way back to the Fort. In two weeks after they had a wedding, and Colonel Samuel Henderson was united in marriage to his fair prisoner, Elizabeth Calloway. Two daughters of that first marriage in Kentucky became Methodist pioneers in North Alabama. Mrs. Eudoxia Estill came first, about the year 1820. She was a woman worthy of her noble parents. She was wonderfully gifted in prayer. Few men could pray with more eloquence or more fervor."
The sad news now comes that this gifted, consecrated woman died in August, 1886, at the home of her son in Belton Texas. For more than sixty years she was a widow, and spent the most of that period in North Alabama, near Talladega. I knew her from my boyhood as the sister of my mother, and had for her both reverence and love. When in Talladega some four years ago I found that she had lost her only daughter and had gone to Texas to live with her son. It was a great gratification to me to hear her spoken of with so much tender regard. Nearly every one called her Aunt Docia, and seemed to respect me the more on her account. She was born in 1794 in North Carolina; was married in 1812, and died in 1886. She embraced religion and joined the Methodist Church in 1820. She was the intimate friend of such old preachers as William McMahon, James Faris, Elisha Taylor, and James McFerrin, of the Tennessee Conference; and of Dr. R. S. Kennon, Ebenezer Hearn, and Greenberg Garrett, of the Alabama Conference, to all of whom she has been reunited in the home above. Let all her children follow her as she followed Christ.
