Rev. JORDAN MOORE died January 2, 1887, Tennessee Methodist Conference
Father expressed a desire that you should write his obituary for the ADVOCATE. I give you the following information which I get from papers I find in his private drawer at home. He was born in Montgomery County, Tenn., Dec. 28, 1811; professed religion and joined the Methodist Church, April, 1830; was licensed to exhort April 23, 1832; was licensed to preach Sept. 7, 1833; was received into the Tennessee Conference in the fall of 1834; was ordained deacon by Bishop Morris, Oct. 9, 1836; was ordained elder by Bishop Andrew, Oct. 13, 1839. He was married to Sarah D. Viser, of Tusumbia, Ala., Jan. 17, 1839. He died at his home at Hustburgh, Tenn., Jan. 2, 1887, aged seventy-five years and five days. For more than fifty years he has been a member of the Tennessee Conference, preaching the gospel in its purity and doing good. The world has been made better by his having lived in it. Ten children were born to him - two sons and eight daughters - all living. Mother and father are the first to go; they lived to see all their children converted to God, and all members of the Methodist Church. Thus at the end of a long and useful life our parents lay their armor by and go home to rest.
Pray for his children, dear Doctor, that they may all hold out faithful, and finally be gathered home in heaven.
Your loving friend,
John D. Moore

Salients from the funeral sermon of Rev. JOHN BERRY McFERRIN (1807-1887), comments made by Bishop Holland N. McTyeire. [Another tribute to McFerrin in the June 4 issue.]
John Berry McFerrin was born in Rutherford County, Tenn., June 15, 1807, and "fell on sleep" at his home in Nashville, in the bosom of a loved and loving family, at 12:55 o'clock A. M., May 10, 1887. He was of Scotch-Irish descent. His grandfather was a Revolutionary soldier, and his father, James McFerrin, served well under Gen. Jackson in the War of 1812. Converted about the same time with his son, James McFerrin became a minister and a member of the Tennessee Annual Conference two years before him; and after efficient service died in the prime of life. His mother, to whom he owed, and delighted to acknowledge, much, died a few years ago at the advanced age of ninety-three.
By request of the Conference, Dr. McFerrin preached, October 1875, a semi-centennial sermon during the session at Shelbyville, where, in 1825, he had been admitted on trial. The beginning of his spiritual life, and its principal stages of activity were thus stated by himself in that discourse:
On the 20th of August, 1820, I was converted at a Methodist prayer meeting in Rutherford County, Tenn. Two weeks afterward, in company with my father and mother, I united with the Methodists. This was a surprise to our neighbors, for they regarded the family as Presbyterian. Soon after we connected ourselves with the Methodists I was called upon to pray in public. When about sixteen years of age I was appointed a class-leader. My father having removed to Alabama, and erected a meeting house and camp-ground on his land, a large society was soon raised up, and I was put in charge as the principal leader. Aug. 1, 1824, I was licensed to exhort by William McMahon, presiding elder of the Huntsville District, my father being the preacher in charge of the circuit. On Oct. 8, 1825, I was licensed to preach. The next month I was received on probation into the Tennessee Conference , which convened in Shelbyville, Bishops Roberts and Soule presiding. I was appointed with Finch P. Scruggs, to a circuit embracing Tuscumbia, Russellville, and the counties adjacent. (The Tennessee Conference then extended into North Alabama.) My second year was to the Lawrence Circuit, embracing Courtland, Moulton, Decatur, Somerville, and the counties around-Alexander Sale being my senior. At the end of this year I was ordained deacon by Bishop Soule. My third and fourth years were devoted to missionary work in the Cherokee Nation. At the end of my fourth year I was ordained elder by Bishop Roberts and appointed, with W. L. McAlister, to the Limestone Circuit, embracing the county west of Huntsville, in Madison County, and the whole of Limestone County, Ala. My sixth year I was appointed to the Huntsville Station; my seventh year (1831) I labored in the Nashville Station, as the colleague of L. D. Overall. My eighth year I was Agent for La Grange College. In 1833 I was sent to Pulaski Station where I remained two years. I was then returned to Nashville; then to the Florence District; then two years to the Cumberland District, embracing Gallatin and Clarksville; back again to Nashville; and in the autumn of 1840 I was elected Editor of the CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE. In that office I was to continued till May, 1858, when I was elected Book Agent. This office, with the appointment of Missionary to the Army of Tennessee, I held eight years. Since 1866 I have been Secretary of the Board of Missions. Thus, three years on circuits, two years among the Indians, six years in stations, three years presiding elder, nearly eighteen years Editor, eight years Book Agent and Missionary to the Army, and nearly nine years secretary, make out my fifty years.
The Lord blessed his servant in his homelife. In 1833 he was married to Miss Probart. Their married life was blessed with six children, three of whom survive. Mrs. McFerrin died while her husband was attending the session of the General Conference in Columbus, Ga., May 1854.
He was again married to Miss McGavock, a member of the family of McGavocks so well known in Virginia and Middle Tennessee. Of this marriage were born two daughters. These five children, with nineteen grandchildren, made his domestic life complete. In 1880 the oldest son, James W., was suddenly killed in a railroad accident. He was a noble young man. The father was visiting a Conference in Texas when the sad news reached him. The "stroke was heavier than his complaint." In the last few delirious days he was overheard talking with " Jimmy." All his children and grandchildren of 12 years and upward are members of the Methodist Church. Wife and children, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law within the fold; all his business wound up and papers signed; the new church under roof where his family worship; the Publishing House safe; and 75,000 members added to the Church this year - he was ready to say with Simeon: " Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace."
That John B. McFerrin was an important factor in the moral and material development of his native State none will question.

Rev. BURKET GALLATIN FERRELL (1841-1887) [See June 25, 1887 issue.]
Rev. Burket Gallatin Ferrel is dead. I wish to drop this small tribute on the grave of one whom I loved as a brother.
He was born June 30, 1841, and died April 22, 1887. He professed religion October 1860 and joined the M. E. Church, South. He was licensed to preach in 1865, by Rev. G. L. Staley, P. E.; joined the Tennessee Conference at Edgefield, October, 1865; was ordained deacon by Bishop Paine October, 1867, and was ordained elder by Bishop Paine in October, 1869. Brother Ferrell was a member of the Tennessee Conference nearly twenty-two years, and though a man of rather delicate constitution he had regular work every year, and never failed to go to the work to which he was assigned. He traveled the following works in the order given: Carthage and Wartrace Circuits (J. B. Jordan was his colleague this year); Carthage and Alexandria Station, one year; Shady Grove Circuit, two years; New Market and Maysville, Ala., one year; New Providence, two years; Bethphage and Trinity, two years; Spring Hill Circuit, one year; Goose Creek Circuit, four years; Sumner Circuit, two years; Bethphage and Trinity, one year; Goodlettsville and Midway, one year; Presiding Elder of the Carthage District, two years; Alexandria Circuit, one year and seven months, on which work he closed his labors for, the Master, and went to his reward on high. He filled his appointments till within a short time before his death. His great desire was to work as long as he lived, and this desire was realized. He had but one business in life, and that was to preach the gospel. I heard him preach a sermon in which he emphasized the importance of a preacher being a man of one business. His was a consecrated ministry. All his time, talent, and energy were devoted to that one great cause. His faith in God and the Church was unfaltering. He loved his Church, and believed and strongly advocated her doctrines. He was not sectarian, yet he loved his own Church and was ever ready to defend her doctrines and polity, always giving reason for the hope that was in him.
