CULP'S CHAPEL CEMETERY
(Mt. Auburn Cemetery)

Culp Chapel Cemetery is on the upper reaches of Powell Branch near the Wayne County line and appears on the western edge of the U.S.G.S. Clifton quadrangle at Mt. Auburn Church. The cemetery is large and in two parts. The lower cemetery nearest the church is shown on the quadrangle and is in use currently. The upper cemetery is found by following the cemetery access road up into the pine woods north of the church. This upper cemetery is much older and is no longer in use. There are 24 stacked stone cairns here. In 1989 the area was overgrown; cairns and tombstones extended from the access road eastward into the woods. By 1999 the area was being maintained and by 2004 most of the markers had been cleaned with an acid wash.

Leo and David Donahue recorded this Culp's Chapel Cemetery March 11, 1989. David Donahue updated the lower cemetery April 16, 1999 and checked and updated the entire cemetery September 17, 2004. J. Erving Riley and Ermadine Riley recorded Culp's Chapel cemetery in February 1987. Their record, which appears in Wayne County, Tennessee Cemetery and Death Records, was reviewed, and references to it appear where appropriate.
