QUALLS CEMETERY
Qualls Cemetery, October 2001
Qualls Cemetery is located on the west side of Brush Creek Road south of its eastern intersection with State Highway 100. It is well maintained has somewhat of a problem with grave decoration fads. One fad is building concrete borders around graves and covering them with white gravel. A more popular fad here is moundin the graves. Mounding was once common in this area back in the days when the community gathered once yearly to clean the cemetery. Mounding generally was abandoned in the 1940s/1950s as routine power mowing became common. Some of the mounded Qualls graves have shell covers, reviving an early nineteenth century grave decoration practice in the area. Borders and mounding increase time and costs of maintenance.
An area south of the fenced Qualls Cemetery and of equal size or larger also is used as a cemetery. This is on land owned by J. C. Qualls. It is not controlled by the Qualls Cemetery Association. The cemetery may not have a name. It is treated here as the J. C. Qualls Cemetery.
David Donahue recorded Qualls Cemetery in October 2001 and checked and updated it September 23-24, 2004. Mary (Stewart) Bowen and Melissa (Snyder) Bowen recorded the cemetery in the early 1990s. Their record appears in Mary Bowen's Perry County, Tennessee Cemetery Records (Vol. I). This earlier record is referred to as Bowen in the notes below.
