DEATHS RECORDED IN MADISON COUNTY COURT MINUTE BOOKS 17-19

Foreword

In older Madison County court minute books the death dates of persons who died intestate (without leaving will) were generally given in the record when administrators were appointed for their estates. The death dates of persons who died leaving wills are seldom given; generally if dates are noted in the records of probate these are the dates the wills were executed (made). Hence death dates taken from the minute books covered in this publication are mostly from the records of persons who died intestate; some few are from records of persons who died testate. Along with the death date data are mentions of other transactions of the county court covering persons who have lived in Madison county. (Genealogical data has been abstracted and published by the present writer, in four publications, taken from the Madison County will books, 1821-1914.)

DIRECTIONS: GIVEN FIRST IS THE PAGE IN THE MINUTE BOOK IN WHICH RECORD IS FOUND, FOLLOWED BY DATE THE CASE APPEARED IN COURT, THEN THE DECEDENT'S NAME, FOLLOWED BY DATE OF DEATH AND OTHER COMMENTS.

The biographical sketch of HENRY HARRISON SWINK, the son, was published in Goodspeed's HISTORY OF TENNESSEE, Madison Co., 1887, pages 906-907:

        H. H. Swink, of the firm of Swink Bros., was born in Tennessee in 1841, and is the son of P. J. and Malinda Swink. The parents are natives of North Carolina, and came to Tennessee in 1836. The father was a merchant, yet successfully followed farming also. He died in 1851. Our subject was reared to the age of fifteen years on the farm, when he, in partnership with Z. Voss, opened a grocery in this town, and did business up to the commencement of the war. Our subject then enlisted in the Confederate service, Thirteenth Tennessee Regiment, under Col. Neely, and remained until wounded at Yazoo City, in March, 1863, which so disabled him that he was compelled to remain at home. During the remainder of the war he worked at the saddler's trade, and at the close resumed the grocery business, in which he continued up to the present time, having added largely to his stock, dry goods, clothing and hardware. In 1876 his brother, Geo. W., went in partnership with him, the firm being known as Swink Bros. Our subject was married in 1873 to Miss Sallie Williams, of this county, daughter of John H. Williams. She was born in 1850, and is the mother of six children, three daughters and three sons. He is a Democrat, and a member of the Masonic order.

JUNE through OCTOBER 1891 administrators were appointed to handle the small sums of money due the estates of numerous deceased persons in Madison County, disbursed by the United States government. A special commission handled the claims of persons who had paid "direct federal tax" in 1865. The legality of this taxation had come under question, resulting in many instances in the reimbursement for such taxes as were paid in 1866 for the 1865 taxes. A check of the taxes paid by these individuals in the microfilm records of the taxes collected reveals that reimbursements matched quite well what had been charged in this revenue-raising back in 1866.
