TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS
CALVARY CEMETERY OF ST. MARY'S
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, JACKSON, TN.
Grounds, ten acres, purchased from James and Mariam Grogan, parishioners of St. Mary's, July 18, 1883 (registered same day), for $500. (Madison Co. Deed Bk. 40, page 544) Cemetery consecrated August 24, 1884. Surveyed and platted July 1896 and January 1897, although the newer sections (north and east) have not been platted. Lovely grounds, area fenced-in; well-kept. Access from Hardee Street on the south, with grounds divided into sections and lots; small "streets" bearing saints' names further divide and allow easy access to burial lots. Numerous graves unmarked by tombstones.
Copied by Jonathan Smith, Jackson, July 3, 1992

FIRST INTERMENT IN CALVARY
(Parish rec shows that Veronica, dau of Charles & Catherine Hickey Willey, was born Jan. 15, 1883 and died April 1883. Tombstone was erected many years after her death. Baptismal rec has her birth and baptismal dates, 1883. Like the tombstone the parish burial rec gives her age as 3 months at death. Either she was buried here shortly before the grounds were purchased, in July 1883, or her remains were brought here as the first interment shortly thereafter. The important matter to remember is that Veronica was born and died in 1883 and not in 1884.)WINTER, Mary Edna Burke, w of F. M.
