JAMES HADAWAY served as sexton of Riverside Cemetery (when it was simply called the City Cemetery) for many years. When he died from yellow fever, in 1878, the comprehensive sexton reports to the city council ceased. From that time on, deaths were reported only statistically (so many white deaths, so many black deaths).

NOTE: The names of persons buried in Riverside Cemetery, those whose names are listed in this publication, represent a SELECTIVE listing. The many stillbirths, black and white, children whose names were not given and some others, were not copied.
