LIBERTY GROVE CEMETERY

Looking at portion of cemetery on 1855 church land purchase.
Liberty Grove Cemetery is a well-maintained cemetery located behind Liberty Grove Baptist Church on Hart's Bridge Road. The church was established in 1844 and purchased property at its current location in 1854. The cemetery might have been open by 1857 based on Hart family death dates. Note, however, that all the markers with death dates in the 1850s and 1860s lie side by side in a single row, which hints that this cemetery may date to the early- to mid-1870s and that these burials were moved from the old cemetery. (The mixed-race Old Liberty Grove Cemetery is at the church's original location off Roberts Lane.) The portion of the Liberty Grove Cemetery west of the gate is on the church property purchased in 1854. The land for the portion of the cemetery east of the gate was purchased about 1905. In 2004 the cemetery had little open space within its borders and was being expanded. There may be as many as 100 unmarked graves, mostly on the west side. Fieldstones were removed at some point in the past. There has been minimal loss of markers in the last 15 years. A few eroding disintegrating concrete markers are becoming very difficult to read.
David Donahue recorded this cemetery February 11, 2004, based on an earlier record by Mary Ann Coffman. Mary Ann Coffman recorded Liberty Grove Cemetery in 1989. Her record, under the name Liberty Cemetery, has been available on the Madison County TNGenWeb site for several years.
