BIG SPRINGS CEMETERY
(White Section)Big Springs Cemetery, located at Big Springs Methodist Church on Ozier Road in southeastern Madison County, is a mixed-race antebellum cemetery which continues in use today. Like many antebellum cemeteries which remain in use, Big Springs has had all fieldstones marking graves removed, probably early in the twentieth century. Fieldstone removal may have taken place about 1910 when several large family plots (e.g., Ozier) were laid out near the old core of the cemetery. This is similar to what happened at Brown's Cemetery and the old section of Lexington Cemetery. The removal could have come as late as the 1940s with a shift from an annual cleanup to periodic mowing. The space freed by removal of fieldstones has been reused over the years. This stands out in one place when two rows of markers with death dates 1970 and later lie between two rows of markers with death dates in the 1880s and 1890s.
David Donahue recorded white burials at Big Springs February 4-5, 2004 based on a 1989 record. Patsy McNatt, Wilma R. Robbins, Vera Spencer, Gracie Mills, Bobbi King, Renee Anderson, and Margie Dunavant, members of Harts Bridge Extension Club, recorded Big Springs Cemetery in 1989. A copy is available in the vertical files at the Tennessee Room, Jackson-Madison County Library. In modified form it also appears in Cemetery Records of Madison County, Tennessee, Volume I The Southern Half of County (Mid-West Tennessee Genealogical Society, 1995, pp. 23-34). Their record includes some but not all black burials. This earlier record is referred to as McNatt et al. in notes below.
Note that there is no clear delineation of where white burials stop and black burials begin, so the separation used here is that of David Donahue and is arbitrary. (Click here for black burials at Big Springs.)
