MT. OLIVET CEMETERY
(Southeast Loop)

This section of Mt. Olivet Cemetery includes markers within the large driveway loop to the right as you enter the gate plus markers between this driveway loop and fence to the east and south. David Donahue recorded this section October 3, October 8, and November 17, 2003; and updated in January 26, 2004. There is one down tree within the loop and another down along the eastern fence. About a dozen markers lie face down and are too heavy to life.

NOTE ON JUDIA BOMAR

From:
Tombstone Inscriptions from Black Cemeteries in Madison County, Tennessee, Volume Two
Compiled by Jonathan K. T. Smith
Copyright, Jonathan K. T. Smith, 2000

On page 11 of TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS FROM BLACK CEMETERIES IN MADISON COUNTY, TENNESSEE the reading of the following tombstone was reported as:

JUDIA BOMAR
Born April 13, 1787
Died Mar. 25, 189(3?)

Enhancement of the inscription reveals that the death year is definitely 1898.

The birth-year inscribed on this tombstone is the earliest of any presently-known inscribed on a black person's tombstone in Madison County. The year is distinctly 1787. This is doubtless Judah-Judy-Judia Bomar, a native of South Carolina, who was living with her son, Henry Bomar and family, locally, as shown in the 1880 census. She and her daughter-in- law, Salina J. Bomar, bought a small acreage in 1889 and she also bought a lot on Tanyard Street in Jackson in 1895. (Madison County Deed Books 46, page 163; 53, page 399; 62, page 382) Her reported age in the census of 1880 was 75, hence suggesting a birth-year of about 1805, so that the inscribed birth-year may have been innocently but definitely exaggerated. Even so, Judia Bomar evidently is the earliest-born black person who has a surviving tombstone in Madison County.

Inscribed on the base of the tombstone is a verse, partially eradicated, but reading, in effect, "Sleep while in sorrow friends o'er thee weep."
