LANE CHAPEL CEMETERY
Lane Chapel Cemetery, September 6, 2003
(showing wooden crosses in Cole row near eastern edge of cemetery)Lane Chapel Cemetery is located 6.8 miles west of the present Jackson city limits, on the south side of U.S. Highway 70, about 100 yards east of Huntersville-Denmark Road. Lane Chapel C.M.E. Church is just east of the cemetery on the north side of this highway. Lane Chapel Cemetery is well maintained. Still, it is an odd-looking cemetery because most burials including the oldest identified burials are around the edges of the cemetery; there is a very large open area in the center. It is impossible to tell the number of unmarked graves in the cemetery as a whole; there are at least 10 unmarked graves in the eastern part of the cemetery. Burials marked but unidentified include 24 graves marked with temporary plates missing their information, 24 graves marked with concrete blocks, 6 graves marked with wooden crosses, and 3 graves marked by poles/posts.
David Donahue recorded this cemetery on September 6, 2003 based on earlier work by Jonathan K. T. Smith. Mr. Smith's 1995 record appears in his Tombstone Inscriptions from Black Cemeteries in Madison County, Tennessee and a 2000 update appears in his Tombstone Inscriptions from Black Cemeteries in Madison County, Tennessee, Volume 2. These works are referred to collectively as Smith in the notes below.
