HURT'S CHAPEL CEMETERY
Hurt's Chapel Cemetery, August 2003
This cemetery is located on Hurt's Chapel Road about 4 miles east of Jackson and about a mile north of Beech Beech Bluff Road. The cemetery lies a few hundred yards away from the path of the primary tornado in May 2003. Three trees within the cemetery and a number around its periphery were destroyed. At least six markers were toppled or broken. In the list below, markers damaged by the storm are noted specifically. Most markers indicated as "fallen" were not damaged by the storm but fell for other reasons — such as the base sinking into the grave. As many as a third of the graves here are unmarked or marked with temporary marker plates which have long since lost their information.
David Donahue recorded this cemetery on August 2 and August 16, 2003 based on earlier work by Jonathan K. T. Smith. Mr. Smith's 1995 record appears in his Tombstone Inscriptions from Black Cemeteries in Madison County, Tennessee and a 2000 update appears in his Tombstone Inscriptions from Black Cemeteries in Madison County, Tennessee, Volume 2. These works are referred to collectively as Smith in the notes below.
