DENMARK MISSIONARY BAPTIST
CHURCH CEMETERY

This very large black cemetery is located about 11 miles southwest of Jackson in the Denmark community, at Denmark Missionary Baptist Church on the Denmark-Huntersville Road. The cemetery lies in three sections. Perhaps only about 25% of the burials here are marked and identified. The church was founded in 1871. The southern section of the cemetery, which is surrounded by large cedars, might be older than the church.

David Donahue recorded this cemetery on September 7, 2003 based on earlier work by Jonathan K. T. Smith. Mr. Smith's 1995 record appears in his Tombstone Inscriptions from Black Cemeteries in Madison County, Tennessee and a 2000 update appears in his Tombstone Inscriptions from Black Cemeteries in Madison County, Tennessee, Volume 2. These works are referred to collectively as Smith in the notes below.

South Section

The south section is the oldest section of the cemetery and lies behind the present Denmark Missionary Baptist Church building. In 2003 it appears as a flat, grassy area surrounded by cedar trees. The area is probably full, though there is only a single double marker in place. Another marker is leaning against a cedar. All burials here probably are mid- to late-nineteenth century. The Williamson double marker probably was erected in the 1910s or 1920s.

Theus, Willie, Feb. 4, 1869-Aug. 20, 1875, "Son of Julia Theus" (out of place, leaning against cedar)

Williamson, Mary, Feb. 4, 1828-Mar. 16, 1888, "Wife of Isaac Williamson"
Williamson, Isaac, Dec. 21, 1818-June 9, 1876

East Section

The large eastern section of the cemetery was in use by the 1890s and remains in use today. Most twentieth-century burials before 1970 took place in this section. The area appears full except possibly in the northeast corner. Hundreds of grave shaft depressions are visible. The arbitrary division between eastern and western sections in these notes is at the sharp bend made by the cemetery access drive just before it ends, approximately in line with the rear of the church.
