November 2, 1961

            The Sunday School Union met at Pilgrim Rest Church Sunday, Oct. 29, with superintendents, teachers and classes being present from Lewis Chapel Church, Keys Chapel Church and St. Paul Church. A successful and enjoyable time was reported. J. C. Campbell presided over the Union.

            Mrs. Addie Harmon, Mrs. Anna Lee Kirbly and Mrs. Katherine Ross accompanied Mrs. Marie B. Young to Western State Hospital Tuesday to see her mother, Mrs. Ora Cooper. She is showing some improvement.

            Mrs. Mary Harmon, who has been a patient at JackSon General Hospital, is at home and showing improvement.

            The Rev. P. J. Gooch of Cairo, Ill, spent a few days with his sister, Mrs. Addie M. McClerking.

            Mrs. Addie Harmon was in Jackson Friday to attend the meeting of the Royal Ladies Improvement Club. Mrs. Lorene Harmon, Mrs. Golden Kizer and the writer accompanied her.

            Mr. and Mrs. Henry Croon, Henry Horn and Mrs. Hattie Curry of Humboldt recently visited Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kizer.

          The Rev. G. C. Jenkins, presiding elder of the Paris, Jackson District was here on Sunday, Oct. 29, to close out his years work before annual conference. The annual conference will convene at Quinn Chapel Church in Paris the second week in November. The Rev. E. M. Alcon is pastor of the church.

            The Eastern Star Chapter of Parsons entertained the members and friends with a banquet on October 28 at the school auditorium in Parsons. Those attending from Lexington were Mr. and Mrs. James Ray Teague, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Douglass, Mr. and Mrs. Lenier Douglass Mr. and Mrs. L. P. McGill and iXir. and Mrs. William S. Hart. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all.

            Waymon Jones of Nashville spent Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jones.

            The Annual Men's Day was held at the Timberlake Grove Church Sunday. The Rev. L. S. Briggs of Jackson was the guest speaker. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all. The Rev. O. T. Betts is pastor of the church.

 

November 9, 1961

            Mr. and Mrs. Robert Raspberry and Mrs. Marie B. Young were among the sixteen thousand teachers present at MST. Meeting at Kiel Auditorium at St. Louis on last Thursday. The Honorable John M. Dalton, governor of Missouri, gave a very timely and inspiring address using for his subject "Missouri Moves Forward." General theme for the convention "Education for liberty, the torch is out." A wonderful and enjoyable time was reported.

            Choir Day was held at the Timberlake Grove Baptist Church Sunday. Choirs of surrounding churches participated. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all.

            Appreciation Day was held at the Bible Hill Church for their pastor, the Rev. J. W. Smith. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all.

            Mr. and Mrs. Leo Jackson, Debra, Mrs. Eddie Mae Wilson and Alvin and Donald Leak of Chicago spent the weekend with Mrs. Anna Lee Kirby family.

            Mr. and Mrs. Edward Douglass, Casandra and Mr. and Mrs. Pomp Douglass spent Sunday in Nashville.

            Robert Earl McClerking of Ohio is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will McClerking.

            Elora and Ella Ross have returned from Chicago. They reported having a very wonderful and enjoyable time.

            Mrs. Eula Mae Kennedy and daughters, Aurelia and Charlotte, have returned from California after visiting her husband, Charlie Kennedy Jr., who is employed there. Mrs. Kennedy reported having visited many interesting and wonderful sights on their trip.

            Mrs. Martha Lue Smith is a patient at the Lexington Hospital.

            Mose Hall, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Issac Hall, had the misfortune of getting his ankle broken and bruises in an automobile accident Saturday night on~ the Jackson highway. He was carried to Jackson General Hospital. His condition is fair.

 

December 14, 1961

            The Rev. J. W. Smith filled his regular appointment at Pilgrim Rest Church Sunday and preached a very inspiring Sermon.

            Mrs. Willie Williams and Mrs. Ada Douglass attended the Convocation Sunday at Mason's Temple in Memphis. A wonderful time was reported.

            Jodie Claussel of Memphis spent the weekend with his aunt, Mrs. Nannie Taylor.

            Charlie Kennedy Jr., who has been employed in California, is a home with his family.

            Cecil Cathey, Walter Watson and Charles Johnson spent the weekend in Chicago.

            Mrs. Clara Mae West was hostess to the Tupperware party Thursday night with Mrs. Bertha Bruce demonstrating. Twelve guests were present. Games were played and the door prize was won by Mrs. Lovie McClerking. Sandwiches, punch, candy and coffee was served. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all.

            Mrs. Nell Carver underwent surgery at Lexington Hospital.

            Ople Williams had his leg amputated at Lexington Hospital

            Mrs. Frances Massey has been a patient at Lexington Hospital.

            The Christmas program will be held at Montgomery High School, Dec. 21. Mrs. Ollie Lue Pearson has charge of the program. A very fine program has been planned, so please come and bring your presents and enjoy yourself, and see your children participating in the program.

 

December 28, 1961

            The regular third Sunday services were held at Lewis Chapel Church with evangelist Smith delivering a wonderful sermon.

            Mrs. Addie Harmon and Miss Jessie Trice were in Jackson to attend the Royal Ladies Improvement Club. Mrs. Laveria Flowers accompanied them.

            The Montgomery team played Savannah on Friday night and won. Congratulations boys and girls. Keep on winning.

            Mrs. Bellina Watkins was hostess to the, Tupperware Party on Tuesday night. Games were played. Thirteen guests were present. Grace Mitchell received the door prize. The hostess served hot chocolate and cookies. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all.

            Don Townsend of Nashville visited his father, Manuel Townsend.

            The annual Christmas program was held at Montgomery High School Dec. 21. A wonderful program was given under the direction of Mrs. Ollie L Pearson. A large crowd attended.

            Students from A & I State University spending Christmas at home are Leanna Johnson, Edna Johnson, Benme Cathey, James Hines, Landers Kirby, Curtis and Janice McCollough, Doris Seats, Ruby Hendrix, Ruby Sue Halton, Leo Jackson Jr, Mickey Trice and Ann Parker.

            Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Johnson of Alabama are spending the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cordie Douglass.

            C. H. Johnson and James Earl Kizer of the army are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. John Logan Kizer.

            Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lewis White and Mr. and Mrs. Jim White are spending the holidays in Indianapolis.

            Montgomery team played Humboldt on Dec. 20. The girls won and the boys lost. On Jan. 5 they will play Decaturville. Come out and cheer our teams on to victory.

            Mr. and Mrs. Robert Raspberry and Mrs. Marie B. Young of Missouri are at home for the holidays.

            Christmas programs were held at Keys Chapel, Pilgrim Rest, Lewis Chapel and St. Paul. A wonderful program was held at each church.

            Mr. and Mrs. Reuben West and daughters, Jean and Rose, of Indianapolis are spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Green Harmon.

            Mr. and Mrs. Maxill Watson of Benton Harbor, Mich. are spending the holidays with his parents, Mt and Mrs. Algie Watson and her son, Billy Dables.

            Mrs. Willie Sue Jackson, Mrs. Eddie Mae Wilson of Chicago and Mrs. Virginia Spicer and son of Nashville are spending the holidays with their mother, Mrs. Anna Lee Kirby.

            Mrs. Jessie Bell Buckley and Miss Imogene Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio are spending the holidays with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dessie Steele and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Johnson. Chuck McClerking accompanied them. Chuck had the misfortune of getting cut in Huntingdon and he is at Lexington Hospital in a critical condition.

            Johnnie Edwards of Nashville is spending the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Robinson.

            Waymon Jones of Nashville is spending the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jones.

            Several from Lexington attended the funerals of Mr. and Mrs. George Webster in Parsons Christmas Day. The Rev. L. H. Howell officiated. They were members of St. Mark Methodist Church. They were victims of a wreck which occurred two miles from Parsons. Their daughter, Barbara, and granddaughter, Ann, were also in the wreck. Barbara and Ann are at Lexington Hospital and showing some improvement.

            Lem Timberlake of Memphis spent the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Odell Parker.
