SOME DEATHS NOTICES IN THE LOCAL NEWSPAPERS

[Note: The civil districts cited as places of death from late 1903 are the districts as they existed before that time.]

In photocopies from a nineteenth century scrapbook, donated to the Henderson County Library, by William Logan Barry, the following death notices appear, which with the aid of a perpetual calendar make it possible to reconstruct a few death notices some of which, judging from format and style, from 1873 on appeared in the LEXINGTON REPORTER.

General ROBERT EDMUND /EDWARD/ LEE died "at his residence in Lexington, Va." on October 12, 1870 in the sixty-third year of his age. /He was born January 19,1807./ "For four long years, amid the blood and anguish, the sufferings and desolation of civil war, he was the central figure around which gathered the hopes of a great people, struggling for principles they deemed holy."

SALLIE M. WITHERSPOON, wife of WILLIAM WITHERSPOON, daughter of DAVID RICE died in Madison County, Tennessee, November 24, 1871 aged 31 years.

GEORGE W. POOL died in Lexington, Tennessee, November 7,1871 aged 69 years, 1 month and 3 days old; from a stroke. A native of Pascatauk /Pasquotank/ County, North Carolina, he "emigrated to Tennessee when a young man about forty-five years ago. Forty-two years ago he was married in this county to . . . Mrs. CATHARINE POOL who was a daughter of the late JOHN HARMAN." Having started with meager finances he had accumulated a comfortable estate before the war; he had been a supporter of the southern Confederacy.

INFANT SON of WILLIAM J. and FANNIE J. BROOKS, aged ten days, died in Jackson, Tennessee, December 22, 1872.

G.W.D. /GEORGE WASHINGTON DAVIDSON/ HARRIS "well-known throughout West Tennessee died at his residence in Dyersburg, Tenn., December 9, 1872 in his 79th year. /He was a long-time minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South./ ". . . and his venerable wife who had passed through the storms of fifty-three winters with him followed him" to the grave December 10, 1872. /Her name was Elizabeth Davidson Harris./

MARY HOWARD, infant daughter of C. E. HOWARD, died in Mifflin, Tennessee in the residence of Dr. B. H. Brown, January 16, 1873 aged two months.

ELIZABETH A. BROWN, wife of Dr. B. H. BROWN, died in Mifflin, Tennessee, January 13, 1873 aged about 45 years.

JAMES J. PEGUES, a native of Marlborough, South Carolina, in the 47th year of his life, died in Water Valley, Miss., March 6, 1873.

IDA BELL, daughter of JOHN BELL, aged about fourteen years, died in Henderson County, March 14, 1873.

MATTIE E. JONES, wife of Dr. J. H. JONES and step-daughter of J. G. BROWN, aged about 35 years, died in Lexington in the residence of J. B. Brown, March 28, 1873.

NANNIE BELL, wife of C. F. BELL, aged 18 years, 9 months,15 days, died in Henderson County, _______ 29,1873.

F. M. /FRANK/ DARDEN died _______ 15, 1873 near Jacksonport, Ark., aged 39 years; a native of Henderson County, he had lived in Ark. for only two years; he was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.

LACY MILLER, wife of JOSEPH C. MILLER, died in Henderson County, _______ 16, 1873 aged about 35 years.

MARY A. DOYLE, daughter of JOHN DOYLE, died near Lexington, _______ 29, 1873 aged 10 years.

ELLEN FULLER, wife of JAMES FULLER, died January 22, 1874 aged about 45 years; her husband was chairman of the Henderson County court.

Hon. ELIJAH WALKER died in Savannah, Tennessee, January 1, 1874 in his 63rd year; "well and favorably known in the history of the jurisprudence of Tennessee."

JOHN B. RODDY died near Mifflin, Tenn., May 2, 1874 aged about 30 years; pneumonia.

Mrs. THINY LOVING died near Crucifer in Henderson County, May 3, 1874 aged about 70 years.

FREDONIA TAYLOR, wife of T. L. TAYLOR, died February 2,1874.

R. JANE HALL, widow of ISAAC C. HALL, died of consumption in the residence of J. A. TEAGUE, March 21, 1874 in her 60th year; she was born and partially raised in the York District of South Carolina and moved to Henderson County when young; a member, first of the Presbyterian Church and later the Methodist Church.

KATIE A.POOL died in Lexington, Tennessee, July 2, 1874;born in Montgomery County, Tennessee, August 18, 1812, the daughter of Major JOHN HARMON who moved to Henderson County in 1819. She married GEORGE W. POOL, June 18, 1829 and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1839.

ISAAC SMITH died _______ __,1874, having been "severely injured at Pittsford on Monday"; he had been a railroad employee for about ten years.

GEORGE THREADGILL "an aged and respected citizen of this county" died October 3, 1874; long suffered from diabetes.

MILTON S. EDWARDS died in Lexington, Tenn., August 16, 1875 aged 36 years; left widow and two children.

Mrs. TABITHA TIMBERLAKE died in Lexington, Tenn., August 13, 1875 aged 75 years.

Mrs. AMANDA GRISWOLD died in civil district five, Henderson County, August 16, 1875 aged 33 years; she left a widower and four children.

ADDlE V. LONG, wife of JAMES H. LONG and daughter of Rev. JOHN BROOKS, died in west Jackson, Tennessee, December 3, 1875.

The wife of BANKS JONES, "an aged lady," died in October 1876

Two obituaries identified as coming from the Jackson, Tennessee newspaper:

CHARLES CALLOWAY BROOKS died April 22, 1872,son of the Rev. JOHN BROOKS, in the 21st year of his age.

Colonel SAMUEL L.GANNAWAY died September _______,1875 in Jackson, Tennessee, aged about 58 years; he was one of the oldest printers in west Tennessee; before the Civil War he was editor of newspapers in Jackson and Brownsville; served in the Confederate army; later moved to Illinois and moved about a year and a half ago to Jackson where he died suddenly.

 

WILLIAM V.BARRY (1858-1948) established the newspaper, THE LEXINGTON PROGRESS, in Lexington in 1884 and was its editor for many years; reportedly a good many of the issues of this newspaper were destroyed/ruined when Barry's dwelling and shed were damaged by the cyclone that struck Lexington in early afternoon, March 13, 1913. Some of the death notices of local and/or regional people in extant issues follow below:

Mrs. MATILDA COX, widow of MILINER COX, who had been murdered several years ago, died May 14, 1893 in the residence of her daughter, Mrs. MANERVA JOYNER in Civil District 14; aged 84 years.

Hon. W. T. LOGAN died Feb.18, 1894. A tribute of respect for him, by Bayham Lodge #86, Camden, Tenn., February 26, 1894 extolled his worthiness.

Mrs. LUCY JONES died March 14, 1894 3/4 miles west of Decaturville, in a "ripe old age."

BESSIE HALBROOKS, daughter of WILLIS HALBROOKS, died Feb.15,1894 aged 4 years.

Dr. A. B. HOLDER died in Memphis last week.

J. M. BUCK, SR. died June 29, 1900 in Civil District 11 aged 75 years; left 9 living children; burial at Mt. Gilead.

Miss PEARL McMILLAN, daughter of Dr. J. G. McMILLAN and wife, aged 17 years, died in Decaturville, Tenn., July 2, 1900.

Mrs. CAROLINE McKENZIE, wife of WILLIAM McKENZIE, aged 65 years, died near Reagan in Civil District 11, July 4, 1900.

SAMMIE DARDEN, month old son of FRANK M. DARDEN, died of meningitis, June 30, 1900; burial in Antioch Cemetery.

LESSIE WINSLOW, aged 20, wife of ROBERT WINSLOW, died October 7, 1901 in the residence of her father-in-law, T. H. WINSLOW in Civil District 7; left widower and an infant; daughter of JACK WHITE of Civil District 2.

JOSEPH BELL, died in residence of his son, S. D. BELL in Civil District 2, November 29, 1901 aged 88 years, 2 months, 23 days. Born 8 miles from Nashville in Davidson Co., Tenn. and at age 11 came to Henderson County and settled on the farm where he died; married MARTHA J. MONTGOMERY and had four children; she died and he married TABITHA MANNING and had four children, two of whom survived him, S .D. BELL and Mrs. J. L. WHITE. A Cumberland Presbyterian at Beech Grove since age 18.

Captain THOMAS B. PAINE, commissioner of agriculture in administration of Gov. Benton McMILLIN, died in Lexington, Tenn., August 8, 1903; lived in Savannah, Tenn. but died in Lexington on a business trip. He was state superintendent of education, 1883-1887 and had been superintendent of the Jackson, Tenn. schools for 12 years.

E. W. LEWIS died August 12, 1903; a stroke; lived in Henderson Co. all his life.

VICTORIA E. HALL wife of FEEK HALL and daughter of HENRY GIBSON, died Aug. 24, 1903 five miles west of Lexington; left widower and 2 month old son.

CORNELIA BURSEY, 31 year old wife of J. T. BURSEY and daughter of HARRISON THOMAS died in south Lexington of consumption, Aug. 23, 1903; was second wife of her widower and mother of five children, three surviving her.

LEMUEL A. STANFORD, aged about 60 years, died August 26, 1903; burial Beech River Cemetery; prominent old citizen of the county.

Rev. B. F. BARTLES, formerly of Lexington, died in Lebanon, Tenn., Aug. 27; left widow and children.

CARTER MADISON, oldest resident of Lexington, died Sept. 14, 1903; born in N.C., April 16, 1830; came as a child to Henderson County; his mother died in 1879; neither he nor his sister, Miss "Puss" Madison ever married; burial in the Lexington Cemetery.

ABNER POWERS, 15 year old son of ANDREW POWERS died in Civil Dist.14, Sept.11l, 1903; burial at Judson.

BIRD, Mrs. J. T. STANFORD, Mrs. J. T. HARMON was the only child of the Young marriage still living. Died in residence of her son, A. S. BIRD, November 11, 1903.

Hon. F. POPE McCOLLUM of Beech Bluff died Nov. 24, 1903 in residence of his sister, Mrs. S. J. EVERETT in Jackson, Tenn., aged 42 years; unmarried; sometime state representative and member of Henderson County court.
