PALESTINE CEMETERY
Palestine Cemetery, May 1999
(West Loop in foreground, East Loop in background)
This large community cemetery is located on a hill just west of Highway 22A about six miles south of Lexington. The access drive is about ¼ mile south of Palestine Presbyterian Church. The age of the cemetery is difficult to determine. Oldest marker recorded in the past had an 1847 death year. Oldest marker readable in 1999 has an 1854 death year. The large open areas in the center of the cemetery near the crest of the hill probably had fieldstones marking graves in the past, and most burials before the 1870s would have been marked by fieldstones. There are no fieldstones here now. It is impossible in 1999 to estimate the number of unmarked graves here. David Donahue recorded this cemetery May 1, 1999 and checked and updated it in April 2004.
The cemetery was recorded circa 1976 by Tony Bedwell. His record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Records (R. H. Harris, Memphis, 1976), Vol. II, pp. 385-394. This is referred to as Bedwell in notes below. The cemetery also was recorded by the WPA in the late 1930s. The WPA record and this 1999 record have not been compared. However, name and date information from the WPA record probably was copied into in the 1976 Bedwell record as was done at other cemeteries such as Bethel. For example, the F. N. Hart information seems likely to have come from a temporary marker recorded by the WPA in the late 1930s and not something read by Tony Bedwell in 1976. The WPA cemetery records usually note fieldstone and indications of unmarked graves, so it might contain information needed to estimate number of unmarked graves here.
