JONES CEMETERY
Jones Cemetery is a large and well-maintained cemetery in the Parkers Crossroads area. It is located east of Highway 22 and north of I-40. The eastern section on a low hill is an old community cemetery dating to 1845. It originally was shaded by large cedar trees. At some time in the past the trees within the cemetery were cut down and new cedars were planted along the eastern and western sides of the cemeteries. Only one grave on the eastern edge of the cemetery remains marked with fieldstone. All other fieldstones which once marked graves were removed some time in the past. As choice space within the cemetery ran low, space left unmarked by fieldstone removal was reused. This is most evident where a modern double marker with death dates in the 1970s and 1980s sits amid burials from the 1870s and 1890s. This reuse of space is the normal pattern for area antebellum cemeteries which remain in use today (e.g., Decaturville, Dukes Chapel, Lexington).
Jones Cemetery was mostly out of space within its original borders by the 1930s and the cemetery was expanded down the slope of the hill to the north and west. A small Fesmire family cemetery was established off the northwest corner of Jones Cemetery during this expansion. This Fesmire family cemetery had its own gate and fence, and what is now the center access drive of Jones Cemetery actually seems to have been built to give access to the Fesmire family cemetery. By the 1960s there were Jones Cemetery burials behind (north of) the Fesmire family cemetery and by the 1990s Jones Cemetery was running out of space.
The western section of Jones Cemetery was part of a large expansion in the mid 1990s. An area west of and of almost equal in area to the older cemetery was laid out in a grid. There is space for several hundred future burials in this section. A loop driveway was built around the older cemetery and new gridded section. The fence around the Fesmire family cemetery was removed; in 2004 this area was indistinguishable from the adjacent part of Jones Cemetery. The center drive was extended curving northwest through the southwest a corner of the Fesmire family cemetery then curving to the north-northeast to join the new loop drive. The cemetery has additional vacant land to the south and west.
David Donahue recorded Jones Cemetery October 19, 1992 and checked and updated it February 29, 2004. Charmaine McDonald recorded this cemetery circa 1976. Her record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (R. H. Harris, Memphis, Tennessee, 1976), Vol. I, pp. 43-54. This is referred to as "McDonald" in the notes below.
