INDEPENDENCE CEMETERY
Oldest Section of Independence Cemetery
Independence is a large Antebellum cemetery in western Henderson County. It is located on Independence Loop Road and is the primary cemetery serving the Poplar Springs Community. The cemetery has been in continuous use since the early 1820s.
Independence Cemetery is the burial place of three soldiers killed in World War I (Sidney S. Ayres, Andy J. Gurley, and Lawrence J. Gurley). Matilda Hall (died 1823) may be the earliest identified burial in Henderson County. The marker, shown at right, probably dates to the 1850s. Like many Antebellum church cemeteries, it was initially a mixed race cemetery. Black burials were on the north side of the cemetery and black burials continued here into the 20th century. There is little remaining evidence of the black burials here. Many may lie under the gravel access drive on the north sied of the cemetery.
It is difficult to estimate the number of unmarked graves here. The northern part of the cemetery is the oldest. It lies on a small knoll overlooking fields to the north. As in most nineteenth century cemeteries still actively used and maintained, fieldstone have been removed to make mowing easier, leaving large open areas in the oldest part of the cemetery. The number of unmarked graves in this section could be greater than 100. It is probable this section of the cemetery had become full by the 1920s, when the cemetery was expanded to the south. In the 1960s the cemetery was again expanded, this time south of the road which now bisects the cemetery.
David Donahue recorded this cemetery April 2 and 3, 1999, and checked and updated it over several visits between March 12 and March 23, 2004. Donna Blackstock, Alicia Adcox, and Don Jowers recorded this cemetery circa 1976. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (R. H. Harris, Memphis, 1976), Vol. 1, pp. 123-138. This is referred to as "Blackstock et al." in the notes below. In his Tombstone Inscriptions for Black Cemeteries in Henderson County, Tennessee, Jonathan Smith reported two black burials at Independence Cemetery known from death certificates.
