HARE CEMETERY
Hare Cemetery is a large, well-maintained cemetery about five miles northeast of Lexington on Natchez Trace Drive. The cemetery was recorded October 16, 1999; checked and updated in March 2002, and updated October 10, 2003. It is difficult to estimate the number of unmarked graves. The cemetery is mostly white, but there have been at three black burials here. The first two black burials are nineteenth century and would have been on the southern edge of the cemetery area in use at that time. A circular driveway divides the cemetery into three sections. Oldest burials are within the driveway circle. About 1950, burials began in the area south of the circular drive, between it and Highway 22. An area west of the circular drive has been cleared for future use but had not yet been used by October 2003. For convenience, the record below has been separated into sections. Click here for a fully alphabetized version.
Alicia Adcox, Joan Nowell, Ella Lewis, and Betsy Patterson recorded the cemetery circa 1976. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (R. H. Harris, Memphis, 1976), Vol. II, pp. 468-486. This earlier work is referred to as "Adcox et al." in the notes below.
