DUKE'S CHAPEL CEMETERY
This cemetery is located on Mt. Ararat Road about a half mile north of U.S. 421 on the eastern edge of Henderson County. It appears to be the oldest cemetery in the area, probably dating to the 1820s. Oldest readable death date is 1835. There are several dozen unmarked and fieldstone-marked graves here, though fewer in 2003 than in 1991. Some of the cemetery area is be being reused. Worst example is the Arnold-Cooley double marker which was erected in the oldest part of the cemetery in the 1990s. The carved fieldstone marking the grave of Revolutionary War veteran William Lacy (d. 1836, Age 80) was removed to make room for it. There seem to be few recent graves without markers. (**SEE NOTE at Arnold, Opal Thomas)
David Donahue recorded this cemetery initially on February 11, 1991. It was updated May 2-3, 1992; April 17, 1995; April 4, 2001; October 15, 2003.
Bobbie Pierce recorded this cemetery circa 1975. Her record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (R. H. Harris, Memphis, 1976), Vol. III, pp. 691-700. This earlier work is referred to as "Pierce" in the notes below.

(**The TN Records Team received the following (quoted) email in November 2006 regarding this area and family from Bret Arnold (Descendant):
Several references to a missing Gravestone are incorrect. I have found the Wm. Lacy Gravestone that was supposedly moved to make room for my Grandmother and Aunt, and have included pictures of the stone. It is in the right back corner of the cemetery, down on the flat about 30 feet from the large oak tree. I found it this past spring about a month before we buried Mary Opal Thomas Arnold in May. We still had the grave diggers watch for black dirt or any other signs of a previous burial. There are several references to this matter scattered throughout the "www.tngenweb.org/records/henderson/cemeteries/dukechap.htm" website, many of them in red print.
