John Goff of Giles Co., is my way of distinguishing him from the John Goff who married Susan Walker, daughter of Henry Walker and his wife Susanna Jeffress.
For a number of years I was of the belief that John Goff of Giles was the husband of Susan Walker. Mrs. Liz Williams of Greenville, MS, a descendant of John Goff and Susan Walker had sent me a copy of information her mother had left when she died in 1924. Liz' uncle had done research on the Erwin family, from which they descend. Two of the Goff/Walker daughters married into the Erwin family. The only discrepancy from those notes and what I have found on the John Goff/Susan Walker was the wife of Thomas J. Goff. I do not know the source of her mother's information, however a uncle of Liz had done some research and perhaps he mistook the wrong man. I have found proof of the children of John Goff and Susan Walker, who never lived in Giles County, but died before 1820.
This year Mr. William Q. Martin of Mazon, IL contacted me for information on John Goff. He was researching the lineage of his wife, who descends from the Ballentine/Goff lineage. It was not until his request that I began putting all the data I had together and adding to it with additional research. In the early Williamson Co., TN Tax lists there were a John Goff and a John Goff, Jr. I had not really paid much attention to the John Goff, Jr. In gathering data on John Goff of Giles, adding census records of his children found in deeds, etc. it became obvious something was amiss. New census records on the children to whom John Goff had given land revealed there were 2 sets of children born about the same years. Continuing to add data, I realized some of these children had to be those of the another John Goff. I do not know which was the one referred to as "Jr." but suspect it was not John of Giles. New data has been learned and indicated in red below.
We have now determined that John Goff of Giles Co., TN married two McEwen women who were cousins. He had 3 daughters by his first wife and 2 sons by his second wife.

John Goff of Giles Co. seems to be an admirable man. He lost both his wives at many years before his own death. Some of his children were apparently a disappointment to him and he returned to the bosom of the families into which he had married for his last years. It is possible one of his daughters, apparently the first-born, died as a young woman. She is unidentified at this time if she married and reared a family. There is not known grave marker for him, and I do not know if he was buried in the same cemetery with either of his wives. No marker is known of for his first wife, Jane McEwen. His second wife is buried with a marker in Pulaski. I would like to know where he was laid to rest, but that may never be known.
His industry all through his life brought him a respectable amount of financial success. He settled the estate of a brother in his early life in GI. Co., he shared his land and money with his children and apparently died with little material accumulation. His physical stature is fortunately described in McCallum's history of GI. Co. I consider this a compilation a tribute to him, to honor him for his principals, courage and fortitude. MJM
(NOTE: In McEwen-Goff papers from Franklin, TN Library, information given states John Goff, nephew of Andrew Goff, married 1st 1800 in WM. Co., TN To Jane McEwen, b 1780. Jane died in Franklin, TN in 1808, then John Goff married Isabella Miller McEwen, both John and Ibby died in Texas. Also mentioned in those papers is General George W. Gordon (a son of Andrew Eliza K. Goff Gordon).)
Quoted in part from McCallum's History of Giles Co., TN
"Thos. Stewart was the first Judge of our Circuit Court. .... 4th Judicial Court which embraces Giles Co.... He resided in Williamson Co. near Franklin. .... An illustrative of the land and of the times, an incident in Judge Stewart's life, told me by Mr. John Goff, long a citizen of this county. Before he came to this county he was a near neighbor of Judge Stewart. In harvest time Mr. Goff had a reaping to which all his neighbors were invited. ... Reaping was not only a time of substantial help to neighbors, but they were times of feasting and social enjoyment. Judge Stewart was quite an old man, occupying the position of Judge and was invited, not to labor ... but to participate in the entertainment and the social enjoyment of the day. ... Mr. Goff was a man of fine size and of unusual physical powers, led an active life and was a good reaper as he thought. After the other reapers were on the way, Mr. Goff and the Judge sat to it. Mr. Goff said he dashed off rapidly and thought to leave the Judge immediately, but to his surprise found that the Judge kept close up to him. He then let himself out at his best speed thinking to tire the Judge, as the round they were cutting was of considerable length, still the Judge kept up. Goff said he very soon found out that, instead of running away from the Judge, it was necessary to exert his full physical powers to keep up with him, and by the time he got around he was willing to rest himself, while the Judge was apparently not fatigued."

"We had the pleasure of a call from General G. W. Gordon, of Memphis, TN, who has been spending some months in Texas at the home of his nativity, on the San Gabriel, in WM. county. This gentleman moved to his adopted State some years before the war, where he was living when the rebellion commenced. With the first notes of alarm he offered himself in defense of the South, and his history is entwined amid the fearful days of her bloody struggles. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General, in General Cheatham's division, C.S.A., served during the whole war with distinction, and was three times taken prisoner. His sojourn in Texas has been made sad by the death of a dear and aged mother, whose obituary appears in this issue of the Statesman." p 7, San Gabriel, Jan. 25, 1872
"A Good Woman Gone"
"The victor of the tomb has been busy at his accustomed work! Mrs. Eliza K.Gordon, consort of Andrew Gordon, died in the seventy-first year of her age at her residence in Williamson Co., Texas on Thursday the 18th of January of rheumatism of the heart. The deceased was a native of Virginia, from which she removed to GI. Co., TN, where she resided many years, then removed to Mississippi, whence she immigrated to Texas in 1853, where the voyage of life ended, and her beautiful spirit passed thence the pearly portals.
"It has never been our solemn duty to record the death of one who combined so many of the beauties and nobilities of human character with so few of its frailties and imperfections. She possessed unusual powers of intellect, as also rare and exalted qualities of heart. Of a quick, penetrative and comprehensive mind, her influence was felt and acknowledged wherever she was. Of an amiable, just and conciliatory disposition she was loved and honored by all who knew her. She was good and gifted, generous and forgiving, and represented the fullest measure of our idea of a woman. In every demand that life made upon her, she did her duty and she did it well.
"As a wife, she was dutiful and devoted -- as a mother, fond, affectionate and gentle. None ever sustained those sacred relationships more beautifully and nobly than she.
"As a neighbor, she was kind and generous; as a friend, steadfast and ardent. And thus, in addition to a stricken and sorrowing family, she leaves many other fond ones to mourn her loss, and weep the tear of affectionate sympathy.
"Finally, her life was beautiful and holy -- an illustration of Christianity, a demonstration of truth. For more than fifty years she was a professor of the christian religion, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. And if there is bliss beyond the tomb for those who did their duty here, she is blest and happy there. "I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, from henceforth, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord!""

NOTE FROM COMPILER: I believe John Goff of GI. Co., TN was related to this Thomas Goff, as well as other early Goffs of GI. Co., some of whom were Ira Goff and a brother George W. Goff, who owned a house and lot in Pulaski that John was ordered to sell when he was settling the estate of his brother George W. John of GI. also named a son George W.
I will appreciate any enlightenment on the Goff families that anyone is willing to share. And I am sure Mr. William Martin would be appreciative as well. M. Janell McCann
