A NOTABLE DAY
Col. John B. McEWEN Entertains a Host of Friends
_____
October 12th has been for two years a "Red Letter Day" in the calendar of Wm. county's history and pleasure. On this oftentimes most beautiful day of the autumn, when dame Nature decks herself in earnest of her more gorgeous array, was borne one of our most widely known, wealthiest and public-spirited citizens--Col. John B. McEWEN. For two years he has been celebrating the anniversary of his birth at one of his several places---"MacEden", or "McEWEN'S Rest" so-called on account of being the final "Rest" of four generations: a most beautiful place. A level, surrounded by hills clad in verdure, varied from the green of spring to "the ruined gold" of autumn, and to misty purple in the distance. Here, fine Jersey and Durham cows browse among luxurious pastures of bluegrass that make the celebrated bluegrass regions of Kentucky look to her laurels: clear streams flow from never failing springs of fine water. We even find on this place large pecan and American date trees, as if Nature wished not only to provide the necessaries, but luxuries. Amid such surroundings, Col. McEWEN invites his friends, numerous employees and servants to participate in a gala day for the as we as himself. He sends his "coach and four" around for those friends who do not keep a vehicle, and away they go, to be heartily welcomed by their smiling and genial host, assisted by his daughters and charming grand-daughters.
Everything has been done for the pleasure and comfort of the guests; even the manager of he place, who has held his position thirty-three years, has thrown open his "best room" for the reception of those who prefer in-doors. Old and young have arrived by eleven o'clock and a brisk conversation is going on, supplemented by the almost continuous crack of the gun. The Gun Club. is always a feature of the day. Many were the shots made at "clay pigeons" by the members of the club. and their guests, among whom were Messrs. ELLISTON and H. A. HASSLOCK, of Nashville. About 12 o'clock "mine host" went from merry, chattering group to group, telling them to come to the house. When all had arrived, he stepped forward, and in a short speech told that we were on historic ground; the house, being the school-house where he had received most of his education, and a certain spot designated by him, the house of his grandfather, one of the first settlers of this county, before it was a county. Here David McEWEN, Andrew GOFF and others settled in 1798, in rifle shot of each other for protection from the Indians. The first blacksmith shop and gin were built by David McEWEN.
After speaking for a short time, on incidents of his life, in his usual felicitous style, he said, "now ladies and gentlemen, walk around the house where you find a repast to satisfy your inner man, to which you are most welcome." Such a table! It seemed to be half a mile long! Covered with all the good things befitting such an occasion and day. Barbecued lamb, beef, pig, 'possum and even "ground hog", I was told; breads, cakes, pies and custards; apples galore, and the finest of coffee, served in small tin cups (souvenirs of the occasion), that shone like silver in the sunlight. A feeling and beautiful "blessing" was asked by the gifted young Presbyterian pastor, Mr. J. S. FOSTER. Most ample justice was done to that full and long table. Buttermilk, rich and cool from the rock spring-house built by David McEWEN, and still in perfect condition, flowed like water.
After dinner the talking, walking and gunning were resumed until about three o'clock, when some of the ladies were asked by Col. McEWEN to visit the milking barn, where 45 cows walked up to their stanchions. At last the time came that friends must wend their way homeward. Col. McEWEN was thanked for the great pleasure afforded his friends, and many were the heartfelt wishes that he might round out a century of usefulness and happiness and the day was done" to linger in our memory for man a moon.

This book was written by Graham Rounsaville German WEBB. on the GERMAN, GOFF and related families. It is a bound, typewritten book, and because of its condition and scarcity it is kept in the files. One can also find this book and/or a microfilm copy at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. The copy at the War Memorial Public Library was given to the library when it moved to the GERMAN house in 1949 because Mrs. WEBB was born there. It is thought to have been her brother's Horace GERMAN copy. Ref. Wm. Co. Historical Society Publ. No. 11, Spring 1980

In 1828 Andrew GOFF made deeds of gift to all his surviving children and grand-children. They are recorded in Maury Co., TN Deeds. Those deeds pretty well sum up the relationship to them, and the McEWEN deeds herein separate the two John GOFF families, although they lived in Wm. and Mu. Co., TN at the same time. I suggest anyone interested work the tax lists of Mu. Co., TN for a better view of the land ownership, which is the deciding factor in these families regarding relationships. Obviously the children of Andrew GOFF lived on land he owned and on which he paid the taxes, thus the children do not show owning any property until after the deeds.
Andrew GOFF accompanied Evan SHELBY to the Battle of Point Pleasant 1774. He was Ensign at the Battle of King's Mt. His name is listed with the Revolu-tionary soldiers from Washington Co., VA., also as Ensign of Militia under Col. William CAMPBELL. He received a land grant from NC for services through-out the Revolutionary War, 640A in Wm. Co., TN, on the waters of Big Harpeth. Arrived in TN 3-24-1798, Militia Officers 1777-1780, Louis Preston SUMMERS "History of S.W. VA", p. 854. "Washington Co. Revolutionary Soldiers" by SUMMERS, p. 859, NC Land Grant Warrant 657, entry 1-18-1785.
Will of Andrew GOFF dated 10-1831:
Leaves all to wife except for land to Thomas GOFF'S heirs, mentions daughter Betsy, sons Thomas, William & Isaac. (From McEwen/Goff papers)
Gracy GOFF d. 7-13-1847, age 91 years, widow of Capt. Andrew GOFF; probably the oldest living settler in county; settled on Spencer Creek before town of Franklin was laid off; was present at formation of Big Harpeth Bapt. Church 47 years ago; has left 2 children out of a large family. "Western Weekly Review" 8-6-1847
COMMENT: 6 children (listed in McEwen/Goff papers) does not constitute "a large family". I suspect there were older children who did not come to the Wm. Co., TN area, and there are others unidentified. Of the 2 surviving Gracy, who were they?

John GOFF of Gi. Co. seems to be an admirable man. He lost both his wives at many years before his own death. Some of his children were apparently a disappointment to him and he returned to the bosom of the families into which he had married for his last years. It is possible one of his daughters, apparently the first-born, died as a young woman. She is unidentified at this time if she married and reared a family. There is not known grave marker for him, and I do not know if he was buried in the same cemetery with either of his wives. No marker is known of for his first wife, Jane McEWEN. His second wife is buried with a marker in Pulaski. I would like to know where he was laid to rest, but that may never be known.
His industry all through his life brought him a respectable amount of financial success. He settled the estate of a brother in his early life in Gi. Co., he shared his land and money with his children and apparently died with little material accumulation. His physical stature is fortunately described in McCALLUM'S history of Gi. Co. I consider this a compilation a tribute to him, to honor him for his principals, courage and fortitude.
See McCALLUM'S History of Gi. Co., TN, (not indexed), p. 111. It gives some insight to the humor of John GOFF, as well as containing a description of his physical stature. In one of the tax lists there is one John GOFF referred to as Big John GOFF. I presume it was John of Gi.

(For a number of years I have wanted to know what became of John GOFF of Gi. Co., TN I feared he had come to some tragedy, but I did not expect the following information. When I went to Lamar Co., TN to see if I could find some probate for him, I found the above deed, but there was no mention of a debt on the land. It was dated the same date but the deed was to George W. GOFF for the same land in Lamar Co.,TX No mention was made of the deed to John GOFF. George died soon after acquiring the land and there was a deposition from William BATTE stating he had sold the land to George. I am glad Mr. William Q. MARTIN has persisted in a route I would not have thought of pursuing and finding his will in Wm. Co., TN)

BRASLEY appears in open court on the 9th day of March 1875 ... that he was of sound and disposing memory at the making of said will and was under no undue influence. Also James L. McKAY appears in open court on the 17th day of March 1875 and being duly sworn for the purpose ... also of sound mind and disposing memory and that he made his mark instead of writing his name in conveyance of extreme nervousness and that he was under no undue influence and thereupon it is ordered by the court that said will be recorded.

"We had the pleasure of a call from General G. W. GORDON, of Memphis, TN, who has been spending some months in Texas at the home of his nativity, on the San Gabriel, in Wm. county. This gentleman moved to his adopted State some years before the war, where he was living when the rebellion commenced. With the first notes of alarm he offered himself in defense of the South, and his history is entwined amid the fearful days of her bloody struggles. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General, in General CHEATHAM'S division, C.S.A., served during the whole war with distinc-tion, and was three times taken prisoner. His sojourn in Texas has been made sad by the death of a dear and aged mother, whose obituary appears in this issue of the Statesman."

"A Good Woman Gone"
"The victor of the tomb. has been busy at his accustomed work! Mrs. Eliza K. GORDON, consort of Andrew GORDON, died in the seventy-first year of her age at her residence in Wm. Co., Texas on Thursday the 18th of January of rheumatism of the heart. The deceased was a native of Virginia, from which she removed to Gi. Co., TN, where she resided many years, then removed to Mississippi, whence she immigrated to Texas in 1853, where the voyage of life ended, and her beautiful spirit passed thence the pearly portals.
"It has never been our solemn duty to record the death of one who combined so many of the beauties and nobilities of human character with so few of its frailties and imperfections. She possessed unusual powers of intellect, as also rare and exalted qualities of heart. Of a quick, penetrative and comprehensive mind, her influence was felt and acknow-ledged wherever she was. Of an amiable, just and conciliatory dispo-sition she was loved and honored by all who knew her. She was good and gifted, generous and forgiving, and represented the fullest measure of our idea of a woman. In every demand that life made upon her, she did her duty an she did it well.
"As a wife, she was dutiful an devoted -- as a mother, fond, affectionate and gentle. None ever sustained those sacred relationships more beautifully an nobly than she.
"As a neighbor, she was kind an generous; as a friend, steadfast and ardent. And thus, in addition to a stricken and sorrowing family, she leaves many other fond ones to mourn her loss, and weep the tear of affectionate sympathy.
"Finally, her life was beautiful and holy -- an illustration of Christianity, a demonstration of truth. For more than fifty years she was a professor of the christian religion, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. And if there is bliss beyond the tomb for those who did their duty here, she is blest and happy there. "I hear a voice from heaven saying unto me, from henceforth, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord!""

OTHER GOFF NOTES
I believe some or possibly all the following are related to John GOFF of Gi. Co. I am leaving these records in this compilation for possible research to be done in the future on some of these people. Perhaps if they have proof of connection to "John GOFF of Giles", they may want to contact Mr. William Martin.
THOMAS JEFFERSON GOFF
Thomas J. GOFF who m. a DOUGLASS appears to be the Thomas GOFF of La. Co., TN. He is only 17 years younger than John GOFF of Gi. Co., TN, if census ages are correct. He does appear to live in Gi. before moving to La. Co. He would be 27 in 1816, not a minor.
