INSERT FROM September 10, 1896 issue:

W. T. POYNTER, D.D.

BY Rev. T. J. DODD, D.D.

W. T. Poynter was born in Montgomery County, Ky., on the 14th of August, 1838, the son of Thomas and Angeline Poynter. While he was yet a child his parents removed to Franklin County, near Frankfort, the capitol of the State, where he grew up a strong, vigorous, and industrious boy. He was educated at Frankfort by Mr. B. B. Sayre, one of the most distinguished educators of the country – leaving school at the age of seventeen, and two years afterwards marrying Miss Pattie Poston, of Winchester, Ky. At the time of his marriage he was Principal of the Winchester Academy, one of the oldest institutions in the State, and by his thoroughness in discipline and instruction had made for himself, even at that early age, a reputation which most men acquire only after years of patient and laborious effort. After marriage he became an officer in the banking house of Mr. Henry G. Poston, the father of his wife, which position he resigned at the beginning of the war for an office in the Quartermaster general’s Department in the United States Army. This office he retained until the establishment of peace in 1865, when he became Cashier of the National Bank In Winchester, of which he himself had been the chief organizer.

These different offices he discharged with fidelity and success -- but during the greater part of the time his mind was greatly exercised as to the ministry of the gospel. Trained by religious parents, he had early become a member of the Methodist Church, and very soon the idea of preaching took possession of his heart. Of this he said but little, but just so soon as he saw his way clear, or rather could make his way clear to the relinquishment of business, he resigned his pleasant and lucrative position, and in 1867 connected himself with the Kentucky Conference. So highly had he commended himself, by the sterling character he had shown, to the brethren of the Church and to the citizens of the community that when it became known that he proposed entering the ministry he was immediately requested to become pastor of the Church In Winchester, and so urgent was the appeal and so fitting appeared to be the appointment that the bishop yielded to the importunity of

his brethren, and thus the first appointment that was assigned him was in charge of the people who had known him best, among whom his character had been tried, and in whose service he had displayed that energy and fidelity for which he was then and ever afterwards distinguished.

Four years at Winchester, four years at Millersburg, four at Paris, and a single year at Carrollton completed that portion of his life which was devoted to the pastoral work, It was while al Carrollton that he made the purchase of the famous Science Hill Female College, which, under the fifty years of the presidency of Mrs. Julia A. Tevis, had become one of the most prominent educational institutions of the country.

In the intervening years his first wife had died, and he had married again-first, Miss Kate Winn, of Winchester, and several years after the death of the second wife, Miss Clara D. Martin, of Paris, Ky. Of the first marriage were born a daughter and two sons, Miss Anna, and Meesrs. Henry Poston and Taylor Fletcher Poynter. There was no issue by the second marriage. By the third he was the father of two daughters and a son. Misses Juliet and Hattie, and Mr. Horace Poynter, all of whom have remained at home and were with their father when he died.

His death-of diabetes-occurred on Thursday, July 30. Funeral services were held Saturday morning in the chapel of the college, conducted by Revs. W. F. Taylor, John R. Deering, Victor Savage, and T. J. Dodd, the latter of whom preached the funeral discourse.
